QR Challenge: Chemistry - Matter, Mixtures, Molecules, oh My!

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

4. A detailed case study in how to set up a successful QR Scavenger Hunt using this tool can be found here.

Questions / Answers (teacher reference)

Question

Answer

1. Your science textbook will help out a LOT with this scavenger hunt.Encourage kids to get their textbooks.
2. What are the three states of matter?Solid, Liquid, Gas.
3. Write down 5 different QUALITATIVE properties of matter you could use to describe something (remember Activity 4-B on page 105?) (Note - ONLY WORDS UNIQUE FROM EVERY OTHER GROUP WILL COUNT FOR POINTS!)Lots of examples - Be sure to write them on the board as they come in so that we can cross off others.
4. Name up to 10 different QUANTITATIVE properties of matter (those that can be measured).See the textbook.
5. What is the formula for the volume of a rectangular prism (a box)?length x width x height.
6. What do we call the method used to find the volume of an IRREGULAR object?Displacement
7. What is the difference between a mixture and a pure substance?A mixture is a combination of things with different properties. A pure substance is the same throughout.
8. Give four examples of mixtures: a solution, a mechanical mixture, a suspension, and an emulsion.Varying Answers.
9. What are the two types of pure substances?Elements and Compounds
10. Is milk heterogeneous or homogeneous?heterogeneous.
11. What are the three types of heterogeneous mixtures?Mechanical, Suspensions, Emulsions.

19. Define "Compound".A Compound is made up of chemically combined elements.
20. Explain how compounds are different from mixtures.Compounds are a pure substance (they are the same throughout) whereas mixtures are combinations of matter with different properties.
21. What kind of mixture is Raisin Bran cereal?A mechanical mixture.
22. Mr Willms' favourite colour is what?Orange.
23. Create a 1 minute group mime or dance that shows the process of suspension.Watch drama.
24. What element is represented by the symbol Cu?Copper
25. Draw methane molecule and label the atoms.See Drawing.
26. Take a picture of your group in front of something that represents a mechanical mixture.See photo.
27. Find Mr Walters and get a "Compound Card" from him, then draw the compound.See Drawing.
28. Google "What is the velocity of an unladen swallow" and find the top-hit Youtube video, then practice this short scene and present it to Ms. Waugh.Watch presentation.
