QR Challenge: Physical and Chemical Changes

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

4. A detailed case study in how to set up a successful QR Scavenger Hunt using this tool can be found here.

Question

Answer

1. The dissolution of salt in water is an example of which kind of change?Physical
2. In severely cold temperatures frost will form on windows because the water vapor in the air comes into contact with a window and immediately forms ice without ever forming liquid water. What correct name of this type of phase change?Deposition
3. In the morning, Sam puts bread in the toaster and pushes the lever, soon the bread pops up nicely browned, he then puts butter on the toast and the butter melts. Which one is a chemical change and which is a physical changetoast-chemical butter-physical
4. Draw an arrow, write reactants and products on the correct sides of the arrowdrawing
5. Sublimation of dry ice is an example of what type of chemical reaction?endothermic
6. What are the two most common forms of energy that are part of both exothermic and endothermic reactions?EM and Thermal
7. Both chemical and physical changes can be reversed. Which one...chemical or physical is not easily reversed?chemical
8. If a chemical equation is said to be balanced, what can you conclude about the amount of oxygen and hydrogen that are present in the reactants?the same amount is in the products.
9. Is photosynthesis endothermic or exothermic and which form of energy is involved?endothermic and EM
10. Jenny mixes a clear fluid with a yellow fluid. The combined solution is yellow and smells like sulphur. Jenny says that this is a physical change. Is she right or wrong? and why?wrong, production of odor
11. Are products on the same side of the equation as the same hand that you write with?depends if you are right handed or left handed, products on the right
12. How does energy relate to chemical changes?chemical reactions often involve some type of change in energy
13. When matter has chemical energy, where is that chemical energy stored?Chemical bonds
14. If there is a change in matter and no bubbles or odor are produced, no energy is released and there is no color change, can you safely assume that no chemical change has occurred?no, also have to check if different substance is created.
15. Electromagnetic energy is released in some chemical reactions. What are the most common releases from reaction that are EM energy?Heat and light
16. This is the equation for a common orange substance that shows up on iron...4Fe + 3O2 = 2Fe2O3. Is oxygen considered a reactant or a product?it is a reactant, the oxygen in combined with the iron in the product.
17. Give an example of a combustion reaction.anything burning
18. If you are cooking and the stuff in the pan catches on fire, you should always put a lid on the stuff that is burning. Why is this step so important to stop a fire?because it stops the input of oxygen and combustion cannot occur without oxygen.
19. What is the tallest mountain in Utah?King's Peak
20. What is the state flower of Utah?Sego lily
21. What famous condiment was created in Utah?Fry sauce
