Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

Question

Answer

1. How did the characters Staggerlee and Trout get their nicknames?Staggerlee’s birth name was Evangeline Ian Canan. She took up her nick name at age nine she was inspired by a song her grandfather, whom she never met, used to sing. The song was about a man, Staggerlee, that was struggling to break out of all the gates life had built up around him. Trout’s birth name was Danielle. She was adopted by Ida Mae and Jonathan, who then changed her name to Tyler. Tyler loved fishing, especially how hard trout fought against the line of a fisherman. She decided to go by the nick name, “Trout.”
2. Why did Staggerlee get “picked on” in Middle School? There are two main reasons Staggerlee was “picked on.” First, she was a biracial young girl living in an all black neighborhood in South Carolina. In the 1990’s, this was not readily accepted. Also, her grandparents were well known political activists from the 1960s. Staggerlee’s peers assumed that she thought she was better than everyone else. This was not the case, however, as Staggerlee never felt that way.
3. What part of their identities do the young teenage girls, Staggerlee and Trout, trying to figure out?Staggerlee and Trout both had mixed feelings about their attraction to other girls their age. The girls were tryng to figure out who they were inside. They were not sure if these feelings towards girls were just a stage, or part of who they were and would be in the future.
4. What changed in Staggerlee and Trout’s relationship after the summer? After spending a summer with her cousin, Trout went back home to Baltimore. The two girls did not contact each other very often afterwards. When they did talk, Staggerlee was the one who initiated the call. After a while, Trout stopped returning her calls. After four months, Trout sent a letter to Staggerlee. In it she explained that she now had a boyfriend and felt uncomfortable sharing this with her earlier.
5. What lesson did the two girls learn in this book?In this book, the girls learned several lessons. One lesson was that it was alright to share your feelings with someone you trust. Another lesson was to be open to other people as possible friends, even if they do not share all of your views. The final lesson Staggerlee and Trout learned was that everyone usually explores different identities before finding out their true self.
6. Why did Trout’s friend, Rachael, keep calling her all summer?Rachael was Trout’s close friend back home. Throughout the summer, Rachael called Trout to tell her about boys she saw or talked to that day. Rachael was trying to help Trout get a boyfriend even though she was away.
7. How did the relationship between Staggerlee and Trout come to an end? After several months of silence, Trout wrote a letter to Staggerlee explaining the new developments in her life. The main change in her life was that she now had a boyfriend. Trout was very reluctant to tell Staggerlee because of the numerous conversations they had throughout the summer about their mixed emotions towards girls. Initially, Staggerlee was upset. After a while she moved on, because she now had new friends in high school. Staggerlee accepted the change in her relationships with Trout.
