QR Challenge: Acids and bases QR Code scavenger hunt

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

Question

Answer

1. An acid is a solution that has an excess of H+ ions. The more H + ions, the more acidic the solution.1 What is an acid?1
2. It comes from the Latin word acidus that means "sharp" or "sour".2 Where does the word acid come from?2
3. Tastes Sour, Conduct Electricity, Corrosive, which means they break down certain substances. Many acids can corrode fabric, skin, and paper. Some acids react strongly with metals. Turns blue litmus paper red.3What are the properties of an acid?3
4. Acetic Acid = Vinegar, Citric Acid = lemons, limes, & oranges. It is in many sour candies such as lemonhead & sour patch. Ascorbic acid = Vitamin C which your body needs to function. Sulfuric acid is used in the production of fertilizers, steel, paints, and plastics. Car batteries.4What are the uses of Acids?4
5. A base is a solution that has an excess of OH- ions. Another word for base is alkali. Bases are substances that can accept hydrogen ions.5 What is a base?5
6. Feel Slippery, Taste Bitter, Corrosive, Can conduct electricity. (Think alkaline batteries.) Do not react with metals. Turns red litmus paper blue.6 What are the properties of a Base?6
7. Bases give soaps, ammonia, and many other, cleaning products some of their useful properties. The OH- ions interact strongly with certain substances, such as dirt and grease. Chalk and oven cleaner are examples of familiar products that contain bases. Your blood is a basic solution.7What are the uses of Bases?7
8. pH is a measure of how acidic or basic a solution is.8What is the pH scale?8
9. A reaction between an acid and a base.9What is neutralization?9
10. Used to remove rust and corrosion from metals in a process named pickling. Nitric acid combines with ammonia to form ammonium nitrate, which is a fertilizer. Carbonic acid and Phosphoric acid are components of aerated drinks.10How are acids used in industries?10
11. Stomach secretes strong HCl that helps digestion by breaking down food and killing bacteria. Blood uses carbonic acid to prevent it from getting to acidic or basic. Amino acids are needed in the body because they maintain the energy levels, metabolism, sleeping disorders and obesity. Food: Lemons, oranges, apples, vinegar, sour milk, soft drinks.11What is an Acids role in the human body & food?11
12. Bees use oxalic acid in their sting.12What are acids in Nature's defense?12
13. Used as explosives in mining works.13What is bases role in the industries?13
14. Bicarbonate acts as a buffer in the blood, it is used to neutralize acids. Food: Bananas, chocolate, mineral water, potatoes, spinach, watermelon.14What is the bases role in the human body and food?14
15. Wasp sting is an alkali.15What is the bases role in nature's defense?15
16. Antacids are a good example of what happens when an acid (in this case stomach acid) meets a base (in this case the antacid). The acid and base neutralize each other.Antacids are a good example of what happens when an acid (in this case stomach acid) meets a base (in this case the antacid). The acid and base neutralize each other. Toothpaste is mildly alkaline and is used to neutralize the acid produced by bacteria in your mouth that can cause tooth decay.16What are some examples of neutralization?16
17. Litmus paper-blue(use for acids) and red (use for bases), pH sensor, universal indicator paper, Red cabbage juice.17What are some pH indicators?17
18. Battery acid, hydrofluoric acid, lemon juice, gastric acid, vinegar, Grapefruit juice, orange juice, soda.18What are some examples of things that are acidic?18
19. Liquid drain cleaner, bleach, oven cleaner, soapy water, ammonia solution, milk of magnesia, baking soda.19What are some examples of things that are basic?19
20. Pure water, human blood.20 What are some examples of things that are neutral?20
