QR Challenge: Aquatic Ecosystems

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

4. A detailed case study in how to set up a successful QR Scavenger Hunt using this tool can be found here.

Question

Answer

1. Aquatic systems are shaped by salinity, depth, temperature, water flow rate, and concentration of dissolved nutrients. What factors shape an aquatic ecosystem?
2. Marine Ecosystems, Fresh Water, Estuaries make up the aquatic ecosystems. What are the Main Aquatic Ecosystems?
3. The photic zone is the zone where the most light reaches in an aquatic ecosystem. What is the Photic Zone?
4. The Intertidal Zone has the most biodiversity within the Photic Zone.Which part of the Photic zone has the most biodiversity: Intertidal, Coastal Ocean, Open Ocean?
5. The Aphotic zone is dark (no sunlight) and has a different type of biodiversity. What is the aphotic zone?
6. The Photic Zone relies of photosynthesis. What process does the photic zone have to capture and start energy in the ecosystem?
7. The Aphotic Zone relies of chemosynthesis. What process does the aphotic zone have to capture and start energy in the ecosystem?
8. Intertidal Zones are typically rocky or sandy and exposed to the shorelines. This zone is exposed to the air and sunlight on low tides.Describe the Intertidal Zone.
9. Coastal Ocean Zones are still relatively shallow and receive a lot of sunlight. This area has high Biological Productivity, thus making it more Biodiverse than any other Zone.Describe the Coastal Ocean Zone.
10. The Open Ocean begins at the edge of the continental shelf. More than 90% of the world's oceans are Open Ocean. Very unique species live in the depths of the open ocean since sunlight is not visible.Describe the Open Ocean Zone.
11. Rivers and Streams, Lakes and Ponds, Freshwater Wetlands are 3 sub ecosystems of Fresh Water. What are the 3 sub ecosystems of Fresh Water?
12. Rivers and streams most often form from underground water sources, while others form from ponds and lakes. They are rich in dissolved oxygen and nutrients. Rivers and streams can be found in many different Land Biomes. What are rivers and streams?
13. Water sources typical come from in and out ward flows of water from rivers and streams. The most important need for a healthy pond or lake is a good combination of plankton and algae. Many fish and amphibious animals live here. Land animals need this source of clean water for their basic biological functions. What are lakes and ponds?
14. A wetland is an ecosystem that lays over the soil for most or part of the year. Wetlands are nutrient rich and highly-productive biologically. Wetlands purify water by filtering pollutants and help prevent flooding in other surrounding areas. What is freshwater wetlands?
15. Estuaries serve as spawning and nursery grounds for many important fish and shellfish. This is where rivers meet the ocean/sea. there are 4 types of estuaries. What are the major categories of freshwater ecosystems?
