QR Challenge: 30 things to find to celebrate Justin's 30th Birthday! TEAM #3

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

Question

Answer

1. Your first clue lies on a person in this room who has never been to New York City, and who just so happens to also be celebrating his 30th Birthday!1
2. You’ll find plenty of iconic New York sites in this multiblock complex: The ground level alone is home to the tourist-packed ice-skating rink, the bronze Atlas statue, and the Today Show plaza. Higher up, Top of the Rock rivals the Empire State Building in panoramic city views. Unfortunately, you may not be able to access the five private rooftop gardens if you’re not a Saturday Night Live cast member. But there’s still so much fun stuff to do in Rockefeller Center! You need to find a fun “extra” room in this house, and search out the famous ice skating rink for your next clue!2
3. Every city park offers its own brand of beauty, but the New York City Botanical Gardens go beyond just landscaped flowers. In addition to housing swaths of vegetation—including the 50-acre forest, featuring some of the oldest trees in the city—the garden cultivates a rotating roster of shows that nod to the world’s most cherished green spaces, such as the regal grounds of Spain’s Alhambra palace and Monet’s alfresco sanctuary at Giverny. Justin and Elaina don’t really have a garden, but they do have a garden flag! Find their garden flag and you’ve found your next clue!3
4. Tiffany and Co. celebrates its 175th anniversary, confirming our wild suspicion that diamonds—particularly ones in a certain robin’s egg blue box—are truly a girl’s best friend. The famous jeweler’s stones have been featured 48 times on the silver screen. Before it was Tiffany and Co., the store—originally Tiffany and Young—was a stationery and fancy goods emporium in New York City. In 1940, Tiffany moved its flagship to the current location on Fifth Avenue, and today Tiffany and Co. has over 240 stores around the world. Elaina may not have quite the selection of diamonds that Tiffany’s offers, but she does have her own array of jewelry. If you can find the home of her jewelry, you will also find your next clue!4
5. Friends is one of those shows that Justin and Elaina love to watch, even in re-runs! Friends took place in NYC and the whole show was basically filmed in two spots: Monica’s apartment and at Central Perk. If you wanted to get a warm drink like they would serve at Central Perk, where would you go in their house to make it? You will find your next clue there!5
6. In 1923 there were 16,000 taxicabs, and the average fare was $0.50! Today there are over 40,000 taxicabs and the average fare is $6.00. It is estimated that a little over 1.1 million people ride in a NYC taxi EVERYDAY! Go find our little yellow “taxi” to find your next clue!6
7. At the Bronx Zoo approximately 5,000 animals call it home. Strolling through the 265 acres, visitors spot such exotic and endangered creatures as the Coquerel’s sifaka (a type of lemur), the fossa (a predatory, tree-climbing mammal), and snow leopards. More common favorites, including gorillas, penguins, and polar bears, also reside at the nature park. The Gallas home also houses a wild animal known as the min-pin, named Diesel. He’s a tiny, but very feisty beast that resides in his cage when they are at work. If you can find his cage (Diesel prefers to call it his mobile home, you understand…) then you have found your next clue!7
8. This 100-year-old transit hub funnels thousands of commuters each day, but it’s a destination in its own right: Familiar features include the vaulted, constellation-adorned ceiling and the four-faced opal clock topping the main information booth, both located in the Grand Concourse. Meanwhile, ornamentation above the 42nd Street entrance includes a likeness of Mercury, the god of travel (naturally), and an ornate Tiffany-glass timepiece. In addition to providing transportation, it also is home to 68 shops and 35 local restaurants. To experience all the flavors of New York rolled into one space, this place is a MUST! Locate the type of food you would find at Frankie’s Dogs on the Go and your next clue will be there!8
9. Central Park has a beautiful garden conservatory, and each month it features a different seasonal bloom. This month features the orange daylily. When Justin and Elaina want to admire flowers, they sit at their outdoor table and admire the orange flowers in their window boxes. If you can find that window box, you will find the next clue!9
10. Your next clue is found on an American Icon that is actually French… Known as “Lady Liberty”, this famous statue was given to us by France in recognition of the friendship established during the American Revolution. Being 128 years old, we think “The Lady” looks pretty great, but she has gained a little patina over the years. Made out of copper, she has tarnished (patina) and turned into the lovely green that we now associate her with. In honor of her aged color, you will find her in our green room.10
11. St. Patrick’s Cathedral is one of the most beautiful old churches! Its building has thick marble towers, a cavernous ribbed vault, pointed arches, and buttresses. But the real treasures are inside this active house of worship, which is bursting with awe-inspiring works. There are hundreds of original stained-glass windows with more than 200 saints represented throughout the church and many intricate alters telling stores from the Bible. At Christmastime, thousands of visitors flock to the church to see the life-sized nativity that was hand-carved in Italy. As you know, church is a very important part of Justin and Elaina’s lives, and they always keep a chalkboard with scripture on it in their home. Today that chalkboard has The Prayer of Saint Patrick written on it. Next to that prayer lies your next clue.11
12. Nothing offers a thrilling jolt of Brooklyn nostalgia quite like a ride on the Cyclone. The roller coaster dates to 1927, when Coney Island was a booming seaside resort. Aside from grabbing a beer and hot dog at Nathan’s Famous, riding the Cyclone is the thing to do at Coney Island on a lovely summer day. So, tick, tick , tick…. I feeling you going up, up ,up (the rollercoaster drops you 85 feet!) to find your next clue on this rollercoaster!12
13. The Metropolitan Opera, now in its 129th season, is a vibrant home for the most creative and talented artists, including singers, conductors, composers, orchestra musicians, stage directors, designers, visual artists, choreographers, and dancers from all around the world. The Met is considered as the venue for the world’s greatest voices. It is also housed in the beautiful and ornate Lincoln Center. When you walked in our house today, each of you passed by a large book about Opera. Find this book and you will find your next clue!13
14. New York is Called the “Big Apple”! Find the “Big Apple-tini” for your next clue!14
15. 110 years ago, Times Square officially got its famous name. Before 1904, the square’s name was Long Acre Square. The square got a new name when it got a new subway station—there were too many 42nd Street stops elsewhere in the city. As you can imagine, the square looks very different than it used to. It is now home to hundreds of billboards, the largest TV billboard being 40 feet by 40 feet. Justin and Elaina definitely don’t have a TV that size, but if you can find their “big screen” your next clue will be there!15
16. The new Yankee Stadium opened in 2009 to much fanfare! It may not be the House that Ruth Built, but many elements of the new arena mimic the old, plus cup holders at every seat and a high-def scoreboard are noticeable improvements. A museum behind center field aims to hold signed baseballs from every living Yankees player! Justin and Elaina aren’t big baseball fans, but they do own a baseball bat. You will find it in the “man cave”, along with all other man-related items (such as tools and yard equipment).16
17. New York City wouldn’t be the same without its subways—and not just because the city relies on the system in order to function. The 24 lines run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. On an average weekday last year, NYC’s subways transported well over 5 million people, making it the most trafficked public transit system in the Western world. In some ways, that means that the Subway is the central point of New York City. Find the central spot of our home and scan your NYC Metro Card so you can hop a ride to your next clue!17
18. New York City is known for its supply of souvenirs—from the iconic “I <3 NY” paraphernalia to “Big Apple” junk—there is so much you could buy! Not wanting to be the same as everyone else, Elaina found Justin a souvenir shirt that is a little different, but still distinctly NYC! Your next clue is found on this shirt!18
19. Next, you are headed to the “The Great White Way”! Its nickname refers to the lights along Broadway. Broadway theaters were among the first to wow crowds by using electric bulbs on signs. They completely lit up the night in "white" light. The nickname remains popular today because the millions of lights on theater marquees and billboard advertisements still light up the night sky along Broadway. Today there are 40 different Broadway theaters that you can visit, and each has one of these music instruments in it to play vocal parts and to sing along with. Find this instrument in our house and you will find your next clue!19
20. Right next to Rockefeller Center is the legendary home of the Rockettes! New York City is full of legendary performance venues, but few match Radio City Music Hall in terms of sheer elegance. The interior features opulent chandeliers and lush carpets, while the stage and proscenium are meant to resemble a setting sun. So, “kick” into high gear and get on over to the Music Hall where a lovely Rockette will be waiting with your next clue!20
21. Pictures are the heart of a home. Where most of the photographs are displayed in our house, there you will find a photograph of the Brooklyn Bridge from Elaina’s most recent trip to NYC. Find that picture and you will find your next clue!21
22. I Wish we had time for a trip to China Town because I am really craving some Chinese food! We don’t have time to go that far, but there is a spot nearby that brings the authentic taste of China Town to you! Find the food you would eat at Feng Shui in Central Station, and you will find your next clue!22
23. No mere river crossing, The Brooklyn Bridge is an elegant reminder of New York’s history of architectural innovation. When it opened in 1883, this bridge was a feat of engineering: It was the first structure to cross the East River and, at the time, the longest suspension bridge in the world. Today it is traveled by many pedestrians and some cyclists. You find your next clue where the “bridge” in our house is… the connecting point between our first and second floors.23
24. The century-old main branch of the New York Public Library is about as regal a setting for reading as you’ll find in any city. Two massive Tennessee-marble lions, dubbed Patience and Fortitude, flank the main portal and have become the institution’s mascots. Once inside, check out the cavernous Rose Main Reading Room, spanning almost 300 feet and outfitted with chandeliers and stunning ceiling murals. Though it’s a classy setting in most instances, it’s also where Bill Murray uttered, “Are you, Alice, menstruating right now?” and “Back off, man, I’m a scientist” in Ghostbusters. Justin and Elaina (or maybe just Elaina… lol!) wish their house had a large library… it doesn’t, but it does have a study. Your next clue lies in their study.24
25. Holiday windows and enormous balloons may draw gawkers to Macy’s during the winter, but it is also a year-round destination for some 20 million shoppers. A new $400 million renovation will upgrade the entire Beaux Arts edifice by 2015, but the store has already debuted a “world’s largest” shoe floor, home to 280,000 pairs. Thankfully, not everything will be brand-new: The project will restore the original 34th Street entrance, and some of the rickety wooden escalators—installed when this branch opened in 1902—will remain intact. Elaina wishes she could have that many pairs of shoes, but the collection she has now will just have to do… ☺ Find her favorite shoes in her collection and your next clue will be there!25
26. Central Park was the country’s first landscaped public park. Justin and Elaina may not have a park at their house, but when they like relax outside this is where they go… you will find your next clue there…!26
27. Taking a mere 11 months to construct, the 1,454-foot-tall building became the city’s highest landmark upon completion in 1931. You will find the replica of this building near one of the highest points of the Gallas’ ceiling, and when you find it you will find your next clue!27
28. I know what you are thinking, I like to eat way too much, but you just can’t pass up the cuisine in NYC! It’s time to grab a snack from our favorite terminal vendors! This time I’m feeling like some Cipriani Dolci, Little Italy style! Find that food and you will find your next clue!28
29. Sprawling doesn’t even begin to describe this Manhattan institution known as “The Met”. It’s one of the few spots in the city where you could spend literally an entire day and see only a fraction of the holdings. Behind the doors of its iconic neoclassical facade lie 17 curatorial collections spanning countless eras and cultural perspectives from prehistoric Egyptian artifacts to contemporary photography. Elaina’s paintings certainly are not worthy to be compared to works in The Met, but she does have several of her own paintings hanging around the house. If you can find her painting hanging in their long “gallery” you will find your next clue!29
30. Someone at this party has a very special NYC-inspired gift for the Birthday boy! Find that person and you have finished the scavenger hunt! Hurry… you must finish first to win the prize!30
