QR Challenge: Trig Ratios 1

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

4. A detailed case study in how to set up a successful QR Scavenger Hunt using this tool can be found here.

3. The stringer that supports the stairs makes an angle of 50 degrees with the floor. It reaches 3.2 m up the wall. How far is the base of the stringer from the wall?2.7m
4. A ramp has an angle of inclination of 20 degrees. It has a vertical height of 1.8m. Find the length of the ramp.5.3m
5. A helicopter is hovering above a road at an altitude of 24m. The distance between the care and helicopter along the road is 45m. Calculate the angle of elevation of the car to the helicopter.32.2 degrees
6. A 5 ft ladder rests against a wall. If the top of the ladder is 2.5 ft up the wall. Find the angle the ladder makes with the ground30 degrees
7. You lean a ladder 6.7 meters long against a wall. It makes an angle of 63 degrees with the ground. How high up is the top of the ladder?6m
8. You must order a new rope for the flagpole. To find out what length of rope is needed, you observe that that pole casts a shadow 11.6 meters long on the ground. The angle between the sun rays and the ground is 36.8 degrees. How tall is the pole?8.68m
9. Your cat is trapped on a tree branch 6.5 meters above ground. Your ladder is only 6.7 meters long. If you place the ladder's tip on the branch, what angle will the ladder make with the ground?76 degrees
10. In a triangle one angle measures 55 degrees. If the opposite side is 16, find the length of the hypotenuse.19.5
11. In a triangle, one angle measures 53 degrees. If the adjacent side has a length of 17, find the measure of the hypotenuse.28.2
12. In a triangle one of the angles measures 44 degrees. If the hypotenuse is 20, find the length of the adjacent and opposite sides. adjacent side is 14.4 opposite side is 13.9
