QR Challenge: Health and Safety Legislation

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.


B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

1. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998These regulations were introduced to ensure machines and equipment are regularly maintained and inspected and are suitable for the purpose they are being used for.
2. Personal Protective Equipment Work Regulations 1992 (PPE)These regulations require employers to provide protective clothing or equipment free of charge where a risk assessment has identified it is appropriate. Employees have a duty to use the equipment or wear the clothing provided.
3. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992These regulations place a duty on employers to take reasonable and practical steps to ensure that employees do not have to undertake unnecessary manual handing of materials, stock, equipment etc.
4. The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992These regulations were introduced to prevent injuries associated with the use of visual display units (VDUs). Employers have a duty to carry out a risk assessment of each workstation and the surrounding area to ensure it meets the detailed requirements of the legislation i.e. the monitor is at the right height, provide wrist rests etc.
5. Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981These regulations were introduced to ensure that employers provide adequate and appropriate provision for first aid.
6. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 These regulations are to ensure that employers identify health, safety and fire risks. Employers must carry out risk assessments of the workplace to reduce or eliminate any risks/hazards.
7. The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH)These regulations require the employer to keep a record and risk assessment of all hazardous substances used in the workplace.
8. The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR)These regulations require employers to notify the Health and Safety Executive or the local authority of work accidents resulting in death, personal injury or serious illness which results in an employee being off work for more than three days.
9. The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HASAW)This places a duty on employers to ensure that their employees, visitors and any other individuals are protected from any risks/dangers which could occur in the workplace.
10. The Noise at Work Regulations 1989These regulations impose a duty on employers to reduce the risk of employees’ exposure to noise.
11. Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992These regulations require all changes and extensions of an existing workplace to conform to certain specifications. They cover the work environment, safety, facilities and housekeeping.
