QR Challenge: Volcano Glossary Hunt

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

4. A detailed case study in how to set up a successful QR Scavenger Hunt using this tool can be found here.

2. Magma is liquid rock inside a volcano. Magma
3. Pumice is a light, porous volcanic rock that forms during explosive eruptions. It resembles a sponge because it consists of a network of gas bubbles frozen amidst fragile volcanic glass and minerals.pumice
4. The mantle is the zone of the earth below the crust and above the core.mantle
5. An extinct volcano is a volcano that is no longer active.Extinct Volcano
6. An active volcano is one that erupts regularly.Active Volcano
7. A dormant volcano is one that has not erupted for many years, although there is still some activity deep inside.Dormant Volcano
8. Ash is fine particles of rock dust blown from an explosion vent.ash
9. An Ashfall is volcanic ash that has fallen through the air from an eruption cloud.ashfall
10. A vent is an opening at the Earth's surface of a volcanic conduit.vent
11. A conduit is a passage (pipe) followed by magma in a volcano.conduit
12. A crater is a steep-sided, usually circular depression formed by either explosion or collapse at a volcanic vent.crater
13. An eruption is he process by which solid, liquid, and gaseous materials are ejected into the earth's atmosphere and onto the earth's surface by volcanic activity.eruption
14. A fault is a crack or fracture in the earth's surface.fault
15. Fissures are elongated fractures or cracks on the slopes of a volcano.fissures
16. Geysyers are springs that throw boiling water high in the air. They are caused by volcanic heat warming trapped groundwater.geysers
17. A debris flow (also called a mudflow or lahar) is a moving mixture of rock, water, and other debris.debris flow
