QR Challenge: American Imperialism

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.


B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

1. How did the America and the Philippians interact with each other?The Philippines and America joined together to fight against Spain so the Philippines could gain their independence, but after the war Americans wanted a colony whilst Filipinos wanted independence still, they fought and lost to America this also opened raw materials and new markets.

How did the America and China interact with each other?China was dominated by foreign powers but not colonized and the foreign powers established a Sphere of Influence where they own a part of China without interfering with the others. America wanted to get involved so we came up with an Open Door Policy that let everyone trade. At first the foreign powers declined but after the Boxer Rebellion America helped the foreign powers and they agreed to do the Open Door Policy which led to raw materials and new markets.
3. What was the panama canal about?America wanted to buy Panama from Colombia, but Colombia said no so America used Big Stick Diplomacy to get Panama then proceeded to finish the Panama Canal.
4. Causes of the great war?The direct cause of WWI was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand at Sarajevo on 28 June 1914. When Russia began to mobilize due to its alliance with Serbia, Germany declared war on Russia.
5. Fighting in the great war?Soldiers fought in trenches like savages from melee weapons, to guns with bayonet's.
6. The impacts of America,Cuba,Puerto Rico?America goes to war with Spain in 1898 to make Cuba independent and after this they got raw materials and new land America also fought for Puerto Rico during the Spanish American war to help get Puerto Rico’s independence and get raw materials and new markets
