QR Challenge: Christmas

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.


B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

1. What is the history of the Christmas Tree?Christmas Trees are always evergreen trees because the evergreen tree is "the tree of life". It stays green all Winter and give us the feeling of hope. Some ancient cultures before Christ was born used to bring them into their homes. Some evergreens can even produce flowers and fruit during the winter so people thought they were magical. People in Estonia and Latvia used to dress Christmas Trees and then set them on fire as they hoped to encourage an early spring.
2. What is Holly and Rosemary and why are they asociated with Christmas?Other Christmas evergreen plants are Holly with large bright berries is the most popular Christmas plant. It was once believed that it was a protection against witches and the evil eye. Rosemary is traditionally assosiated with remembrance and friendship. Others include Poinsetta the Christmas rose, the Yew and the Bay.
3. Why do we abbreviate Christmas to Xmas?The commom abbreviation for Christmas to Xmas is derived from the Greek alphabet.X is letter Chi, which is the first letter of Christ's name in the Greek alphabet.
4. What is the history behind the carol "Silent Night"?Silent Night was written in 1818 by an Austrian priest Joseph Mohr.He was told the day before Christmas that the church organ was broken and would not be fixed in time for Christmas Eve. He was so sad by this and could not think of Christmas without music, so he wanted to write a carol that could be sung by choir to guitar music. He sat down and wrote three stanzas. Later that night the people in the Little Austrian Church sand "Stille Nacht" for the first time wihout the organ.
5. What day is known as Boxing Day and whay?26th December was traditionally known as St Stephen's Day, but is more commonly known as Boxing Day. This expression came about because money was collected in alms boxes placed in churches during the festive season and later on it was distributed to the poor and needy after Christmas. As time goes by, this day is just a sporting tradition where millions of spectators watch sports like cricket or football on tv in Australia, Uk or the U.S.A In Uk is the beginning of sales at big stores whereas in Spain is on 6th January.
6. What is the tradition of hanging up stockings on Christmas Eve?A famous story about St. Nicholas, a poor man who had no money to give to his three daughters on their wedding day. St Nick dropped bags of gold into the stockings which the girls had left to dry by the fire. The sisters found the gold and ever since the children have hung up stockings on Christmas Eve hoping that they will be filled with presents by Christmas morning.
7. Who was St. Nicholas?St. Nicholas was a Christian priest who later became a bishop. He was a rich person and travelled the country helping people by giving them gifts of money and other presents. St. Nicholas did not like to be seen whe he gave away presents so the children were told to go to sleep quickly or he would not come!Nothing has changed and Santa Claus will not arrive this Christmas unless the children go to sleep early.
