QR Challenge: EMF Unit Amazing Race

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

4. A detailed case study in how to set up a successful QR Scavenger Hunt using this tool can be found here.

2. What is there evidence of when a paper clip moves toward a magnet when the two objects are 2 cm apart?Evidence of an invisible magnetic force
3. Sometimes you cannot push two magnets together to make them touch becauseLike poles repel
4. Where are magnets the strongest? The poles
5. What do iron filings on a plate show when they move into a distinct pattern when gently shaken above a magnet? They show the magnetic field lines
6. How does a compass work?Magnet in the compass aligns with Earth's magnetic field
7. True or False: Magnets stick to all metals.False
8. True or False: Two magnets can attract or repel.True
9. True or False: A magnet has a north pole or south pole but not both.False
10. True or False: A magnet has an invisible magnetic field extending from its poles.True
11. What was this student testing? How does the number of magnets affect the number of washers picked up?
12. I push a table with a force of 800N and the table does not move. What happened?I didn't push enough to overcome static friction
13. What is net force? The sum of all forces acting on an object
14. If an object is not moving what does that mean about the forces acting on it?The net force is zero

16. You are pushing identical weights across two tables. Table A: It push took 20N of force to push the weight. Table B: It took 40 N of force to push the weight. Which table has a smoother surface?Table A
17. What is friction?Force between two objects that resists motion
18. Name two ways you can make an electromagnet stronger.add battery, increase the number of winds on the coil, increase the iron content of the core.
19. Which component becomes a temporary magnet when the circuit is closed?C (steel core)
20. Which component is the energy source for the electromagnet?B (battery)
21. Which component does NOT have electricity flowing through it when the circuit is complete?C (steel core)
22. Is the force balanced or unbalanced?Balanced
23. Is the force balanced or unbalanced?Unbalanced
