Leadership Book Anaylsis

Book:

"Leadership Secrets of Hillary Clinton" by Rebecca Shambaugh, Copyright 2010.

I chose this book because like her or not, Hillary Clinton is known throughout the world for her leaderhship abilities. She's been in the news a lot lately. I decided it would make for an interesting analysis.

I hope you enjoy my Brainy Box presentation.

Summary of "Leadership Secrets of Hillary Clinton":

There are many personality traits that have lead to Hillary Clinton's success as a leader.  She developed a sense of purpose at a young age. That helps her stay on course, listen with empathy, be authentic, work hard, speak clearly, speak concisely and keep learning.  She is able to admit when she's made a mistake, then make adjustments. Being prepared intellectually helps her face tough opponents.

Hillary is able to anticipate change so that she can be a part of it, rather than just feel the effects of it.  She is open minded, has developed a large network of peers, and she makes her words count.

Because she has a clearly defined sense of purpose, she is able to be authentic, walk the walk and express her true self.  She gets to know people personally and remembers what she learns about them.

How does Hillary Clinton's leadership style compare to the Knowledge Loom Model?

As I read "Leadership Secrets of Hillary Clinton", I thought about how the advice I was reading about leadership related to teaching and to school leadership in technology.  Here are my thoughts:  (you can click on the background to allow scrolling down to read all text)

Vision -  As a young girl, Hillary Clinton was active in her church.  During some time spent volunteering, she learned about the struggles children of hard working immigrant workers faced.  She made it her purpose in life to fight to help children of poor families to get health insurance and other basic needs met.

A school leader articulates a shared vision of how technology will be used effectively in schools.  A good leader will genuinely care about implementing technology to help teachers teach and learners learn.

Planning - Hillary Clinton has made mistakes along the way.   One of those was shutting out people who disagreed with her when she was working on her health care plan.  She learned from that mistake and now has a totally different strategy.   Her style of leadership involves a large network of peers that she goes to for guidance.  She says that you should state your goal and clearly explain what success is going to look like when making a plan.

School leaders must play an important role in devloping, assessing, implementing and revising school technology plans.  A good leader keeps up with the times and knows when it's time for a change.  A good leader collaborates with a network of peers as well.

Access - One of Hillary Clinton's steadfast purposes in life is to work towards universal health care.  She would like all children and all families to have equitable access to health care.

School leaders should work to make sure that there is equitable access to current technology that supports teaching and learning.

Integration - Hillary Clinton is able to understand and accept who she is as a leader.   She is authentic and walks the walk.  She expresses her true self and can tell her own story so that she can be a model for the change she is seeking.

School leaders have to model purposeful use of technology and help teachers and students integrate technology into daily classroom practice.  Hilary Clinton has been all over the world helping citizens of countries integrate democracy into their lives.

Assessment and Evaluation - The book talks about how hard Secretary Clinton works to study policies and stay current with what is going on where ever her travels take her.  She keeps up with data, facts and perspectives.   She uses the data to make informed decisions.

School leaders often depend on data to assess and evaluate learning when it comes to technology.  School leaders use assessment and evaluation techniques to inform decision making and make sure teachers and improving and learning.  This is not unlike politics.

Support - This is one of the biggest changes that Hillary Clinton made in regards to leadership.  Early on when she was working on her health care plan, she shut out those who did not agree.  This was a mistake and she recognized that and now does things very differently.   She has created networks, relationships and 'sounding boards'. She visits people in their homes and businesses.   She knows you can't do it all on your own.  You need the ability to build networks and alliances that provide you with invaluable guidance to overcome obstacles and the necessary support to achieve critical goals.  She looks for a common purpose and set of intentions.

School leaders must work to see that a support system exists that facilitates the use of technology in schools.  A good leader creates a network of people they can go to.

Professional Development - One of Hillary Clinton's leadership qualities is that she strives to study and understand every issue she is involved in.  She sets goals high and is always learning more.

School leaders need to provide meaningful, relevant, up to date staff development for staff members.  It's all about learning!

Community Relationships - I think that one of the main reasons people respect Hillary Clinton is because of her clear, straightforward, informed statements.  When running for her New York Senate seat she got out into the community and talked to people.  People began to trust her because she proved that she cared about people.  She's earned a lot more respect over the years through hard work and reaching out to people.

School leaders have to develop strategic community relationships to foster and understanding and care for planning, implementing and assessing the use of technology in school.

Ethical and Legal Issues - There have been many ups and downs in Hillary Clinton's career.  She recently was questioned in the Senate about an embassy attack in Benghazi.  She has developed as a leader so strongly that she is able to avoid an immediate reaction to accusations, her answers are clear and concise, and backed by facts.   She's tough, but often shows emotion as well.   I think she's where she is today because of being authentic and ethical in addition to hard work.  She works for issues she truly cares about and I believe that facilitates ethical leadership.

School leaders must model and promote and understanding of ethical and legal issues related to using technology.

Hillary and Technology

Hillary Clinton embraced technology as a communication tool early on. She feels a multiple media approach is very important.  She delivers messages using YouTube, e-mails supporters, and does town all meetings.  She is known for televised debates and interviews.  She has leveraged every communication mode available to her.

Final Thoughts

The book "Leadership Secrets of Hillary Clinton" was a pretty quick, easy read and I would recommend it.

Brainy Box was pretty simple.  You have to be very careful about saving. There aren't many options as word processing goes.   Now that's it's done, I do enjoy going back over it.  Editing is easy, but it stopped letting me upload photos and links and I'm unable to figure out why.

Thank you for taking the time to check out my presentation.
