Igneous Rocks

 

  • mostly found in Earth's crust

  • volcanic and made from molten material

  • examples are lava and granite

  • seafloor is made from basalt, a dark lava

  • some granite rocks can be millions of years old

Sedimentary Rocks

 

  • formed from the eroded fragments of other rocks
  • also formed from remains of plants and animals
  • fragments rest in low lying areas and are pressed into sedimentary rocks
  • some examples are sandstone and limestone
  • can often find fossils in sedimentary rock

Metamorphic Rocks

 

  • made from igneous or sedimentary rocks
  • created by pressure, heat, or the intrusion of fluids
  • examples include marble (from limestone) and quartzite (from sandstone)
