Earth Science

Cools and Hardens

Magma and lava cool into igneous rock.

A few examples of igneous rocks are

basalt, obsidian and granite.

  Weathering and Erosion

Wind and water break up rocks and carry them away.

The sediments drop off in time.

 Pressing and Cementing

Sedimentary rocks form when the weight of other

rocks cement the sediments together.

Sometimes in sedimentary rock layers

you can find fossils which tell you about

organisms from the past.

All fossils are at least ten thousand years old.

A few examples of sedimentary rocks are

sandstone, limestone and shale.

  Heat and Pressure

This occurs deep underground. Heat and pressure

chemically change the rock into metamorphic rock.

 Examples of metamorphic rocks are

marble and quartzite.

Melting

Rocks melt deep below Earth's surface. The underground melted rock is called magma.
