Fathers plan and preparations
He’d decided it was more a milestone than a birthday celebration. An adventure as a gift to himself.
He pulled out a bone-shaker look-alike from the shed.
He’d wanted to prove to me that he was not declining in physical fitness, despite his age.
How I felt
With a sarcastic tone overriding my worry, I’d told him he was brave to wear Lycra at his age.
I was capturing every second, whilst also focused on trying to comfort my father during the steep ascent.
I was worried about dad’s old bike, asking him about getting it checked out.
Hardships and challenges
The road was only going to get steeper.
His breathing is getting harsher and faster, and his bike may be jolting as well.
Kilometres of hard labour were starting to take a toll on fathers body,

Pride at making the attempt in the first place.
Exhalation when the video is over, as if he was reliving the memory.
Laughter along with the rest of the family at his contorted expression.
