Beginning
It begins by introducing the protagonist of the story, Lakshman, looking at the new almirah, it's a piece of furniture that will be for his brother.
After that, he goes downstairs and meets Amme, she was cutting vegetables on the ground, and this action was forbidden, owing to broke one of the rules imposed by the stepmother.
The boy asks about his stepmother and replies to him, that she was getting ready to go buy Lakshman's new shoes.
End
After all this, Lakshman goes up the stairs and sees his brother's almirah, he was so upset that in a fit of rage, he ends up destroying the piece of furniture.
Upon arrival from shopping, the stepmother sees the broken piece of furniture and calls a servant, after asking him some questions, he leaves, and Lakshman, seeing that his stepmother is not angry, confesses that he did.
Finally, the stepmother doesn't punish Lakshman, however, she tells him that he will pay for all the repairs, at last, they reach an agreement where he would only pay half.
Middle
Therefore, the boy refuses to buy his shoes, the stepmother insists nonetheless eventually she leaves alone.
The boy responds to his stepmother, and comments that Amme does not understand English, as a result, the stepmother sends the old woman home.
Suddenly, the stepmother appears through the door and begins to reclaim Amme, and orders Lakshman to change her clothes so they can go shopping.
Characters
Servants: Make, an elderly Singhalese woman dedicated to cooking, also there are more servants in the house.
The Stepmother: A young woman married to Lakshman's father and they have a baby, named by Lakshman as the bloody woman, however she is a patient and tolerant woman.
Lakshman: is the protagonist of the story, he's 9 year old also very short for his age, indeed deeply hates his new stepmother
