In 1852 an American woman called Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a famous book called Uncle Tom's Cabin which was written to demonstrate the horrors of slavery.
By the time slavery ended in 1833 some people argue it was no longer profitable and involved less than 1% of investment in Britain
From 1776 the USA gained its independence
