Steep relief
This leads to the water taking less time for it too reach the city. Which as a result leads to an increase in the speed in which the water floods the city also this means that it will take less than a day for the water to reach the city.
Limited flood defences
This means that the city is not protected which as a result means that if a flood occurs the city will not be protected which could lead to precious land and infrastructure being damaged. Also it means that there will be a decline in crops as the ground will be infertile due to salutation. In addition to this there will be an increase in chemicals such as nitrates which are found in sea water which can spoil eco-systems and destroy wildlife or they can cause eutrophication. The effect of this is that it will lower the oxgen levels in the lakes and increase the amount of algae growing in lakes which lead to the sun getting blocked which results in the fish in the sea dieing. Which then leads to the ecosystem being spoilt due there being a large amount of algae yet no other living organism being able to live there.
150mm of rainfall in the catchment
The 150mm of rainfall in the catchment means that the land was saturated which lead to the ground being vunerable to flooding as saturated ground lowers iniltration which leads to the water being unable to flow under the ground at base level which could have resulted in the water causing a land slide or slump but instead it just increased the surface run off which meant that it took less time for te water to reach the city. In addition to the effect of such a large amount of rain is that it was an unexspected amunt of rain in a short amount of time which leads to belief that the water will have also affected the amount of water flow in the lake mainly due to the fact that the river has a maximuim amount of water that it can intake and as a result if there is a large burst of rain the river will definatel burst its bank as it would have been fill way past its limits. Also the lage amount of precipitation means that the ground is saturated which as a result means that there is an increase in the surface run off which also leads to there being an increase in damage to farm houses. In addition to this due to the high amount of precipitation and the low amount of interception from trees there is also a lot more rain that reaches the river and as a result the river and town flooded and also since the city is built inside a meander it also means that when the city floods it also has to suffer the intense rain which means that there are lots of damage done to other essesntial facilities such as the business that have to suffer de to an lack of customers and tourists due to the fear of there being a repeat flood as well as the amount of debris makes the city unattractive which leads to people feeling fear and dislike towards the city. As a result of this the city is currently a ghost town with less than ten visitors yearly which also implies that the city is no longer attractive to tourists and as a result that has lead to the tourism industry failing to thrive in such an area where there is a high amount of debris lieing on the ground and consequently as a result of this debris the city has become a hazard not only to tourists but also to the innocent civilians that live there. This means that there is also a need for medical and enviromental support from the goverment which is why a 20million clearance fund has being put forward by the government concering protecting such areas of natural intest such as this city. In addition to this the natural habbitats which flourished in the 1970s when elvis presly was around have been destroyed which has lead to a large amunt of sorry heart broken supporters of those times with heart disease crying and weeping because of the sad memories of his passing .
Drainage system backed up
Building on the floodplain over the past 40 years
Soil saturated from wet summer
Very short lag time due to impermeable soils and steepness of catchment
Long term deforestation for farming
Morpeth is built inside a meander
