Penicillin was discovered by Alexander Flemming in 1928 as an agent that killed bacteria
Florey and Chain developed a method of growing Penicillium fungus in a liquid culture so that it produced penicillin
Florey and Chain developed a method for producing relatively pure samples of penicillin from the cultures
They knew that penicillin could kill bacteria on agar plates but needed to test if it would work on humans
Tested penicillin on eight mice infected with streptococcus: Four were given penicillin and survived. The four untreated mice died
Penicillin tested on humans but much larger quantities needed
First test on a human was successful for the first four days, but they ran out of penicillin and he died
Once larger quantities were produced the results were successful and large US pharmaceutical companies started to mass produce
more extensive testing confirmed the effectiveness of penicillin in treating bacterial infections
