Absorption - Digested food entering the blood system
Acid - A substance with a pH number lower than 7

Amylase - An enzyme. Digests starch into sugar. Produced by the salivary glands, pancreas and duodenum
Anus - The last sphincter of the alimentary canal
Rectum - An organ that stores faeces
Large Intestine -An organ that absorbs water and useful salts back into the blood stream and forms faeces.
Small Intestine - An organ that is split into two halves; the duodenum and the ileum. Narrow and long to increase the time that food spends there, so more nutrients are absorbed.
Salivary Glands - A gland that produces saliva and amylase, pH 7.5
Liver - A gland that produces bile
Gall Bladder - A gland that stores bile and injects it into the duodenum
Pancreas - A gland that produces amylase, lipase and protease
Stomach - An organ that stores food, churns food, breaks down protein and produces gastric acid to destroy bacteria on food
Oesophagus - An organ, a 25cm long tube that connects the mouth to the stomach
