Masters were corrupt and little was spent on food
Like Nazi concentration camps, families were divided by gender
People lost their sense of identity
They had to wear demeaning uniforms
Every day people living in workhouses were stripped naked and made to bathe under the masters’ supervision
Children were often sold to work in factories or mines
In 1867 reforms were passed so that human injustices would never happen again
The poor law of 1834 made workhouses the only welfare for people who could not work such as single some, orphans, the mentally handicapped and the elderly
They had to work hard despite their inability
Debtors’ prisons were for people who had failed to pay their debts....even small amounts
People would often go to these prisons with their families
Inmates had to work hard and their conditions were comparable to slaves
They were overcrowded and filthy
They were mixed together with serious criminals
They were abolished in 1869
