Satyagraha was a campaign of non-violent civil disobedience.

Britain did not keep its promises of giving India more self rule after the first world war. Instead it made laws that were harsher.
The Salt March of 1930 started with only a small number of followers but ended with large numbers joining. Many were arrested.
He took advantage of the Involvement of Britain in the Second World war to start eht "Quit India" campaign.
Indians resented the superior attitude of the British.
Nehru said “Indians were subjected to insult, humiliation and contemptuous treatment.
By the 1930s the INC changed presidency with more left wing leaders such as Subhas Bose and Jawahaarlal Nehru looking for more revolutionary tactics.
Initially like many moderates Jinnah was happy to have Indian autonomy (rule itself) while still being in the British Empire.
The second world war made India stronger economicallly as it developed its industries.
Many Indians gained experience in senior positions during the war giving them self-confidence to run their own affairs.
The labour party won the election of 1945. The new prime minister wanted India to be independent to focus on rebuilding britain.
Britain was in huge debt after the second world war to the USA. Not only that Britain was actually in debt to India.'
Jinnah demanded a separate muslim state in a post Independent India. This happened with the development of Pakistan.
The Rowlett act and following demonstrations which led to the Amritsar Massacre led many Indians to become more politically involved.
