Renaissance architecture was characterised by the use of features inspired by the ancient world, such as semicircular arches, domes and Corinthian columns. Churches often had Latin-cross plans, Greek-cross plans or circular plans.
In the 15th century, there were renowned architects such as Filippo Brunelleschi, who designed the dome of Florence Cathedral, and Leon Battista Alberti, who designed the façade of the Church of Santa Maria Novella.
In the 16th century, the architerct Donato Bramante designed the Tempietto at San Pietro in Montorio and Michelangelo designed the dome of the new St. Peter´s Basilica in the Vatican City.
