This painting tells us how fugitive slaves and white people came together to find freedom. People who normally helped slaves helped them because they realized the horror and conditions they went through. The dark colours are very dramatic and the white part in the corner could represent the freedom they are riding towards.
Slaves Waiting for Sale by Eyre Crowe in 1861 is a scene from an auction waiting room where slaves look proper and well dressed only so the buyer doesn't know what horror they have been through. This is sometimes the case where families are split and slaves wait curiously and wonder what their new life will be like. This was exhibited in 1861 in the Royal Academy.
