Jake from a bad home
Jake was another main character in this book. He came from a bad home, unlike Rosa. He was forced to work in the mills by his father, so he did not get the chance to go to school. When he got his pay from working, his dad would take and go by alcohol for himself. Jake was afraid of his father, so he would live in garbage heaps in the freezing air, just to get away. He did not have much to wear or eat, and he smelled awful. He was beat by his father if he did not come home with the money.
Textile mills in 1912
This a textile mill from 1912 in Lawrence Ma. As you can see women are working in it, but children and men also worked in the mills. They did not get paid much for all the hours they worked. Very few children went to school because they had to work.
The main character in the book is named Rosa
The girl in the picture above is the main character, Rosa. She goes to school but is afraid for her sister and mom's lives when they go to protest. Her sister, Anna had to go work in the mills when her dad died, otherwise they would starve. If they did not starve to death first, they would freeze. There were 5-7 people that lived and had to fed in your house.
The chance to go to school
Rosa was able to go to school but she did not have very many supplies. When her mom and sister went to the protests she said that she would not go to school if they went to riot. Although her mother still made her go, Rosa did not approve of the actions that her mother took. There were not very many kids that got to go to school, Rosa was lucky. Even less kids were coming when the riots and protests started.
