Mitsuke
This print was created by Hokusai Katsushika in 1804. It depicts an old man at a rest stop off of Tōkaidō road. He and another traveller are eating noodles. This print tells us many things about the state of Japan. Leaders focused on infrastructure such as roads, with rest stops like the one shown being built. It also shows the peace of Japan internally during the Tokugawa Shogunate. The roads were safe enough for two unarmed elderly men to travel. The Tokugawa Shogunate unified the country politically and created peace and improved infrastructure.
