the first steam locomotive

The
steam locomotive is the precursor of the train, the first steam locomotive is
invented by Richard Trevithick in 1804 in England. A locomotive is the thing in
front of the train that pulls the carriages forward. The first locomotive looked
a lot like a steam engine with wheels. Coal is burned, the steam goes up and
energy is made. The idea of a wagon on rails came from (coal) mines so coal was
probably the most logic fuel for the steam locomotive. The steam locomotive
wasn’t fast, a running man could keep up with the train. That wasn’t a real
problem because the main task was carrying coal and other things. The first
wagons on rails were pulled forward by horses so there already were rails for
that wagon. The steam locomotive was too heavy for that rails and the steam
involved a lot of illnesses, that’s why this first locomotive hasn’t been used
a lot.

train tickets

If
you have ever been in a train, you know you will need a train ticket. In the
past, you could get a train ticket at the train station, it was a small paper card,
with your starting point and destination on it. A conductor would pass by, you
needed to show your card and he would give it a stamp as prove that he saw it.
At the train stations in smaller towns, you would get a paper and the conductor
would write your destination on it. Nowadays, it’s all a little more
complicated. Because there are multiple train organisations in England, you
need to go to the main site, Britain’s National Rail Network, were you can look
for the right train. This site will link you to the site of the train
organisation itself and there you can order your ticket and seat. When you
arrive at the actual train station you have to pay and get the ticket.

the Thalys

The
Thalys is an international high speed train network between the Netherlands,
Belgium, Germany and France, made in 1996.

The
amount of people that use the Thalys gets higher every year, because of the
expansion in destinations, the number of trains that is getting more and more
and the journeys are getting shorter. When you wanted to go from Amsterdam to
Paris in 1996, it lasted almost 5 hours and nowadays it’s only 3 hours and 18
minutes.

Most
of the Thalys trains are red with grey, but if there are special occasions a
train will be painted in a fitting motive or color. For example when the Dutch Olympic team came home after
the winter games, the 100the anniversary of the EU, or to promote the new
Tintin movie

Liverpool and Manchester railway

This
was the first railway between 2 big cities. It was very special because it was
also the first double railways. The railway was made in 1830 by George
Stephenson it was very hard to install the railway because of all the object
that blocked the path. They had to make 64 bridges and tunnels, go underneath a
town and a swamp. They also had to convince the shed of Stafford it was a good
idea but eventually they did it. The first railway between 2 cities, supposed
to transport passengers and mail. They also had to find a train that could ride
on this railway and therefor they made Rainhill Trials, a contest to decide
which train was going to ride on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The next

the Rocket

The
Rocket is a locomotive build by George Stephenson. It was made for the Rainhill
Trails contest and out of the 5 contestants from which only 3 were taken
seriously, the Rocket was the only one who actually lived up to the demands. It
was able to ride 80 kilometres with waggons. It was the first locomotive that really
worked an there are a lot, in that time, ‘modern’ technologies applied. It had
extra pipes in the steam boiler which made the steam production faster, besides
it also had a chimney and that created a turbo-effect. You can see the original
Rocket at the science museum in London.

magnetic levitation trains

The
magnetic levitation is a train that works on magnetic fields. It’s something
most people would think of when they think about the future. But it’s already
possible. There are now 3 commercial magnetic levitation trains in use, in
Japan and South-Korea. In Japan, they are building another magnetic levitation
train that will have the speed of 505 kilometres an hour. There are 2 kinds of
trains, one with the electromagnet in the train itself, this type it’s easier
to construct and with lighter magnets, it doesn’t take a lot of energy. The
second type has the electromagnets in the rails, there for the train is
lighter, it doesn’t need to be as lifted up as type one and the steam and heat
can easily go away. The good thing of magnetic levitation trains it that the
wheels don’t slow down the train and that’s also one of the reasons it can ride
really fast.

the London underground

The
London underground is the metro system in London. When London started to grow
and so did the railways, most trains were forbidden in London because of health
and danger issues. Later when those problems were solved, there was no space
left for railways and that’s why the London underground came in to existence.
The route network is sorted in colors, every color is a line, with a starting
point, destination and stops. There are also 2 kinds of lines; the sub-surface,
that’s about 5 meters under the ground and deep level which are 20 meters under
the ground. Those are harder to make but it was/is too much of a burden to the
people who lived in London to make the subsurface lines because therefor they
have to open up the street and later
cover it and the engineer of deep level lines happens all under the ground.

the rails trough the years

The
first rails weren’t meant for trains but for wagons they used to carry the coal
in coal mines. The rails used to be wooden and later they were made of cast
iron, that made the resistance of the wheel les. The wagons didn’t had an
engine so people had to pull or push them, they used horses or the let it roll
of a ramp by gravity. They also had to pump water out of the mines and that’s
when they invented the steam engine.
That’s when Richard Trevithick came up with the steam locomotive. The
cast iron rails weren’t strong enough to carry the locomotive and wagons so
they had to think of something else. They made all the rails of steel an that’s
what they are still made of nowadays.

As
we all know, all Jewish people in the Netherlands who were send to
concentration camps, were deported by train. The company who did this was the
NS. They were paid for every person that they deported and of course, that’s a
lot of money. They deported 110 000 people, but the German didn’t paid for all
those people. They stole the money from the Jewish as they deported them and
let them pay for their own journey to death. NS never did anything about this
and even made more railways to the concentration camps so they could make more
money. Until 1944, the staff of NS wanted a discontinuation and asked all
co-workers’ to stop working. The result of the strike was that the German, that
got their food by train, didn’t got their food anymore. Aad Veenman director of
the NS eventually apologised in 2005 but he could have done that way earlier.

the environment

To
walk and to cycle are the most eco-friendly ways to move around but after
those, the train is a pretty good option. Trains are better to the environment than
cars and buses because they produce less carbon dioxide and they don’t cause
file. Electric trains don’t produce any carbon dioxide and they are even better
to the environment when the electricity comes from the wind or the sun. Also
the few trains that use petrol, carry around a lot of people what makes the
carbon dioxide emission per person also less.
