Sound and Vision, Hilversum

After a long selection was it clear: the architects Willem Jan Neutelings and Michiel Riedijk had the best idea. In 1992 they started with the design. There are lots of different people who use the building for different things. It was important that all those different functions and people were connected with each other. The architects did that with the entrance. There is one entrance were everybody have to go to get in the building!

In this building, almost the whole dutch history of sound and vision is saved. The architects wanted to accentuate this with the design. The outerwall is covered with glass. In this glass are famous historic television events showed. The scenes are abstracted to make it more everlasting.

You can visit the museum whenever you want!

The Cube houses, Rotterdam

Tourists from all over the world come to see them, The cube houses in Rotterdam. The cube houses are designed by Piet Blom. He tilted the cubes 45 degrees and let them stay on a kind of pylon. All the houses together represent a forest. So each house is like a tree.

you can really live in the houses. there is one thing about it: there aren’t straight walls… All the walls in the houses are diagonal. No paintings on the walls for the residents!

if you want to visit the cube houses, there is one house open for visitors. This ‘show cube’ is open to show how it is to live in a house like this.

Rietveld Schroder house, Utrecht

The Rietveld Schröder house is designed by the dutch architecture Gerrit Rietveld. The main theme of the design is the art style called ‘De Stijl’. Piet Mondriaan also made his art with this theme. Something you maybe recognise from ‘De Stijl’ are the straight lines and primary colors like red, blue and yellow. Rietveld used this 3 colors very much.

You’re able to visit the house. When you walk inside you can see there aren’t regular walls. Rietveld made one big living room on the first floor, which you can split into different spaces with flexible walls.

Between 1925 and 1933, Rietveld had a studio on the ground floor of the house. He Drew there his last drawing.

Now the Rietveld Schroder house has a place on the UNESCO world Heritage list.

Groninger museum, Groningen

the main architect of the building from the museum is Allesandro Mendini, but there are a lot of other people who helped with the design.

The designers wanted the building to fit by the function of the part of the museum. All the parts have an own building, which are connected with halls and small bridges. Bridges are necessary because the building is in the water.An example of a part of the museum is the storage of the museum. The color of the museum is yellow and when it’s dark, it will light up. This light makes the building like it’s gold. The golden color is to show how valuable the artifacts in the storage are.

Not only the outside is amazing, the innerside is beautiful too. the designers used a lot of colors and structures on the walls what makes you feel happy!

Hotel Intell, Zaandam

The main inspiration from architect Wilfried van den Winden was the style of the traditional houses from Zaandam. The building consists of several traditional houses. 70 houses are stacked on top of eachother.

Van den Winden used four different kinds of green and one house on top is blue so that’s a real eyecatcher. To make one house blue was an idea of van den winden after he saw a painting from Claude Monet, which was painted in Zaandam in 1871

The building is 40 meters high, has 12 floors and 160 rooms! you can stay in the hotel since march 2010 so it is a very new building.

Eye filmmuseum, Amsterdam

The eye filmmuseum is built at the shore of ‘het Ei’ in Amsterdam. It is designed by the Austrian architects Roman Delugan and Elke Delugan-Meissl.

The funny thing about the building is the shape. Because when you look at it when you stand at the front, you see a totally different shape than when you look at it from the left side for example. There are many suggestions for what it could be: a bird, a plane or maybe a space shuttle? The outside is covered with white trapezoidal aluminium plates. Inside you can find 4 modern filmzalen, a lot of space for the galleries, work spaces and a restaurant.

The architects started the design in 2005 and since 2012 the museum is visitable. The whole process has cost 35 billion euro’s.

The Erasmusbrug, Rotterdam

Across the river ‘The Maas’ , in Rotterdam, you can find the Erasmus bridge. It connects the north and the south of Rotterdam. The Erasmus bridge is designed by the dutch architect Ben van Berkel. The bridge is named after the dutch Renaissance humanist Desiderius Erasmus.

The cable stayed bridge has a length of 800 meters and is 139 meters high. In the middle of the bridge is a white tower support placed. Because of this pylon, the bridge gets the shape of a swan and is ‘The swan’ his nickname. The ‘swan’s neck’ is mounted to the bridge with 40 cables.

This year, from September 21th till the 24th, the bridge was lightened up with rainbow colors in honour of the Rotterdam Pride.

The bridge opened to traffic in October 1996.

The Market Hall, Rotterdam

A place where you can eat, can live and can enjoy the phenomenal architecture. The fantastic building, designed by the company ‘MVRDV’, has the shape of a horseshoe. The front and the back have both a glass wall. You can see through the glass the amazing artefact on the ceiling of the building. It is really colorful, and it’s enormous! The work of art from artist Arno Coenen is the biggest in the world with a surface area of 11.000 m2! He calls it: ‘The Horn of Plenty’.

As you read before, the Market Hall has different functions. You can buy and eat a lot of fresh food by the food stands. But you can live there as well. Behind the artwork from Coenen, are 126 appartements where you can live. The apartments have a look out over the city, and you can look at the inside of the market hall. when you live on top of the building, so in one of the penthouses, you have a glass bottom so you can see the market from above!

Central station, Amsterdam

The central station of Amsterdam is the first station that is designed by a famous architect. The main architect was P.J.H. Cuypers who also designed the Rijksmuseum. These two buildings look a bit like each other. Cuypers got some help from another architect whose name was A.L Van Gendt. The building is built i between 1881 and 1889.

The station is built on three man-made islands to prevent that there are many rails throughout the old city.

The two pillars on the left and right side of the building symbolize the function of the train station: the new town-gate.

On the eastside you can find a king's pavilion. There the king could wait for the train. For his carriage was a parking place. This parking place is now for regular cars.

Public transport terminal Breda, Breda

Every year, a new building can be the building of the year. This year’s winner was the public transport terminal in Breda.

The main reason the building won:

All the different functions of the building are connected with each other in the design. Under the ground you can find 700 parking places. Above the parking is the main arrival hall. The rails from the trains are on the roof. This is a good idea because now you don’t need any extra space to place them next to the building!

There are also lots of offices, commercial spaces, recreative rooms and there are even apartments where you can live! Even these functions are connected to the others in the design.
