Straight Edge

This subculture originates from Japan (surprise!). It began at the end of the 1960’s. Lolitas are known for dressing cute. Again there are different types, the main three are gothic, classic and sweet.

The characteristic clothing piece for Lolita is the huge skirt. Women wear a petticoat or a crinoline. The top is a blouse. The outfit reaches no further than de knies. A Lolita ordinarily wears a wig. Another striking aspect are the long Victorian underwear they occasionally wear under their skirt. In addition to all of that knee stockings or ankle socks are worn. With high heels and plateau soles or low shoes with a little bow.

What does a man wear? Well, thats is generally wide puffed pants that end at the knee with a blouse and maybe a kind of jacket.

Of course we can’t forget the accessories! Maybe a little hat, bow or crown?

Gothic

When this became a thing is not really clear but it has been around for quite some time. Posh people pay a lot of time and money to their appearance, not that buying (for example) a Lolita outfit is cheap, but a Posh only wears clothes from expensive brands. Knowing this you won't be surprised when I tell you that Posh people have a high income and like to show it.

Normally they wear a polo. Popular colours are baby blue and baby pink. Baseball Caps, fashionable scarfs and pearl necklaces are often seen to.

A Posh usually plays sports like golf, tennis or hockey. There is also a little thing about the way they speak. They say the ‘r’ in a very unique way, it sound more like ‘ewrrr’ than ‘r’.

Lolita

This youth culture begun mid 1970. Punks rebel against almost everything politics, commercial, society, the list goes on. They like to be different. It may not surprise you that they use clothing as a way of making a statement.

Again black is extremely popular. So are skulls, spikes and studs. The most striking aspect of a Punk is their hair. Colorful, in a mohawk (the bigger the better). Shoes are very often black (wow, I did not expect that!) with studs. There is a lot of choice in the shoe style. For example: Boots, combat shoes, platforms, (lo) creeper, heels etc etc.

Accessories are a big part of the look. You can never go wrong with a (stud) bracelet, belt, necklace(s) or earrings.

Posh

Punk

Scene is a side branch to Emo. Emo and Scene are often confused. This is because the clothing styles are quite alike. However if you take a better look you can see some big differences. For example Scenes dye there hair in bright colors. They also wear a lot of accessories like bandanas, large sunglasses or large jewelry. They are also known to wear shirts with dinosaurs and guns. Actually I think it’s nothing like Emo!

A Scene also has a more positive view on life than an Emo.

In the mid 2000 you also had Scene Queens, their hair was very high and sometimes had horizontal stripes. The were often seen at My Space, which by the way doesn’t exist anymore.

Scene

Hipster

Hipster began in the 1990’s, it grew to be more popular at the beginning of the 21st century. The style is mainly followed by people between 20/30 who don’t like to be “put in a box”.

They frequently wear secondhand clothing. There jeans are skinny and flannels are popular. Hipsters don’t really follow the mainstream. The funny thing however is that by doing that they actually helped develop a lot of today's trends. The high bun for example. But also things as wearing leggings, a lot of denim and hats.

The point of a Hipster look is that it looks a bit careless, not all of the pieces have to match.

Hip Hop

Emo started as a music style in the 1980. In the 1990 it became a lifestyle, especially for young people. The moment emo really hit was in the 21 century.

There are several styles that have influenced Emo like Goth and Punk. Here is a general description of the Emo look: the hair is straightened and cut asymmetrical with a lock in front of one eye (I wonder if it’s hard to see), clothes are mostly black and/or with a print of a band, piercings are popular (ear, nose, eyebrow, etc.), jeans (usually skinny) and optional dark makeup. Music is an important aspect. This music usually has a message. The exact music style really just depends on the person, like it does with everything.

Skater

Straight Edge is more a lifestyle than a style of appearance but it has one aspect that is very obvious on the outside. One or several big, black X’s on the hands or other parts of the body, these can be drawn (“X-ing up”) or tattooed. This goes along with other XXX logos.

Being a Straight Edger means that you don’t drink, don’t smoke and don’t use drugs (so… it’s actually very healthy). A lot of them are also a vegetarian or vegan.

Of course there certain popular music styles for example: punk, hardcore, metalcore, deathcore and hardcore punk.

Straight Edge is in a way found by the disgust of Ian MacKaye and some of his friends. They saw the excessive drinking and use of drugs of punkers, didn’t agree and Straight Edge was their reaction.

Nowadays Straight Edge attracts a lot of Christians as well as atheist people, who were originally attracted by Lifestyle.

Emo

Goth is a lifestyle that stated in the 1970's. It originates from a Punk style in Amerika.

There is a wide variety of different types of goth. Such as Fairy Goth, Spice Goth, Lolita Goth and many more.

These different types of course dress differently. There is however a general visual of “the Gothic”, the first things first. Black. The first thing that pops to mind! Goths dress in black or other dark colours. Popular materials for clothes are lether, latex or velvet. Shoes are high and a lot of them have plateau soles (I would most definitely trip).

Chains and piercings are loved. The makeup is black very often their hair and nails are too.

All this black sends out a bit of a scary vibe don’t you think? This however doesn’t count for all the types of Goth. In some of them people wear bright colours with their black or even almost nothing black.
