Dummy Hoy

Dummy Hoy was the first deaf baseball player to make it to the major leagues. He contracted malaria when he was 3 years old and became fully deaf and mute. He played for Washington in his first year in the major league in 1888. He was later the first person inducted to the American Athletic Association of the Deaf Hall of Fame in 1951.

These 1905 professional football pads were used to reduce the effects of hitting and tackling in football for players.With not much to work with, it is easy to see why over the years there has been so many injuries in the game of football. The evolution of these pads have made the numbers decrease, but not enough.

1890 Laced Leather Basketball

This light brown laced leather game ball was used to play with in the 1890's. The change from the leather ball from then to now explains the transformation of basketball from then to now as well. This collectable is rare and worth more than you think.

Wrestling has always been a very popular sport: so popular, that even Joan and Constance Bennett (beautiful actresses and sisters) were caught wrestling in 1910. They were famous for acting and singing, but brought a new look into wrestling.

Hockey Goalie Gear

This previously game-worn hockey gear that is still in tact is pretty rare, it ranges from 38,000 to 254,000 pesos on eBay. Vintage Cooper GP 50 L was a very popular type of gear to wear as a goalie during the late 1800's.

The First Boxing Match

In 1859, the famous fight between Tom Sayer and John Heenan was sought to be "the first world championship boxing match". Between the two, there were broken bones, blood, sweat, and tears, which didn't keep the public quiet about the most infamous boxing match.

Vintage Basketball Shoes

These hand constructed 1910 basketball shoes were the early "high top" models that actually introduced rubber soles for regular shoes. These shoes were one of 150 items on display in the first ever museum exhibition on the Black Fives. These shoes actually constructed the idea and development of Converse, a current popular shoe (not worn for basketball anymore).

Introduction

I chose to use the topic "sports" for my virtual museum because sports has personally shaped me to be the person I am today. I find a lot of interest personally in sports, so it was more intriguing to research and use artifacts for. Seeing how different sports such as football, baseball, basketball, boxing, wrestling, hockey and other sports I was unfamiliar with have evolved over the years is really fascinating to me as well.

I hope that my virtual museum will keep you as curious as it kept me! Even without a passion for sports, I think that learning about the history and development of it is very beneficial.
