Nationalism
“The Era of Good Feelings” was a time from 1815 to 1825 in which there was a sense of political harmony. This was possible because of James Monroe, a Democratic-Republican elected to the presidency in 1817, who had more moderate views on the National Bank, protective tariffs, and internal improvements. Along with having less internal political strife, the nation was for the first time in many years-not directly involved in any foreign affairs. This freedom from previous difficulties, allowed the United States to enrich the country’s culture, through art, architecture, literature, and a sense of national pride. These factors contributed to the rise of Nationalism in the early nineteenth century. Nationalism is a loyalty and devotion to one’s county. This was important to the American people as they created America’s new identity.
