December 1904- Fr. Gapon leads a peaceful march to winter palace
Wanted to present a list of Demands to show Nicholas
Fr. felt that Nick had no idea about the condition of the workers
Several 1000 people join his march, Nick wasn't home but soldiers were.
They open fire on people...this is known as Bloody Sunday
Nick was to blame as this incident set off violent rebellions in Russia.
Three weeks later Nick's uncle, Grand Duke Sergei, was assassinated
Influence of rasputin
Rasputin's growing influence moved the Tsar away from the people, becoming the spark plug of the Russian Revolution.
Rumors of his affair with the Tsarina did not sit well with the population, as false propaganda began to form amongst the people.
He came to the attention of the Tsar and Tsarina when he helped heal Alexei....since he had hemophilia.
Known as the man who couldn't die. Was beaten, shot, poisoned, clubbed and ended up dying from drowning in the river closes to the Palace.
He proclaimed that if one of the Royal Family members were to kill him, then the entire family will be killed within two years. He was correct.
Overall had a bad influence on Royal Family. Even thought most of the family members enjoyed his presence, it made them look bad as a whole causing false propaganda to occur, and in the end, their deaths.
Vladimir Lenin
Served as Head of government of Soviet Russia from 1917-1924 before his death from a stroke.
He was raised by revolutionary parents, mainly because of his brother that was killed going against the government.
When Lenin began to plot his overthrow towards the monarchy, he had so much animosity towards the government
Joins the Russian social democratic Party...also known as the Marxist and was arrest/exiled in 1895
In 1902, he wrote "What is to be done." - The aim was to convert the working class to Marxism
After a long exile, Lenin was brought back into Russia by Germany
Hoping that Lenin would start a new revolution was Germany's view, as Lenin hated WW1.
Upon his return, he was very anti-menshivik, preached destruction of provisional gov't
He promises "Peace, Land, and Bread" to the people which helped his political campaign.
In July 1917, workers and soldiers and Petrograd soviets listen to Lenin and start a strike, his right hand man is arrested.
After more strikes, Lenin was named leader of Russia by Bolsheviks
Was approached by Germany with Treaty of Brest-Citvosk- super unfair but had to be signed. Couldn't fight Gr. because they didn't have any resources.
Ordered death of Royal Family in July of 1918.
