The internment camps where the German Canadians were placed during world war 1 was opened on August 18,1914.At this time many immigrants had came to Canada seeking land and freedom.After the outbreak of the war,civilians with links to Germany,Turkey and Austria-Hungry were arrested for being threats to Canada security husband and fathers where force into camps but women and children were not expected to work.Out of the 8,579 men 2,009 were German.In 1917 the civilian camps were closed camps were closed because of the labor shortage in Canada.
Historical significance
When the German came to Canada everything was great they were working and contributing back to the country . As the years goes by they started to receive hate from the government whom restricted them from certain things such as there culture and different places In addition to that the government decided to force all these German into a camp and make them work hard labor some where even arrested for being a threat to Canada which was not true they weren't a threat to Canada they were just a group of people who are willing to work and want to give there family a better life but instead there life was taken from them.
