The Abolition of Slavery

This source is a poem called “Sorrows of Yamba” written by Hannah More. In this poem she talks about her life as a slave and how hard it was. This source suggests that slavery is wrong as herself and others had to see their own children die just so the white men could get their gold, this is shown in the quote “Child from mother too they tear, All for love of filthy gold”. This poem also stated that no matter how poorly the slaves were treated the British Law would never protected them, this was shown in the quote “What and if to death he fend me, Savage murder tho’ it be, British Law shall never befriend me, They protect not slaves like me”. This is evidence to support the abolition of slavery because mothers were torn from their own children and the British Law would not protect the slaves from such unfair treatment.

The Brookes Diagram

This source is the Brookes Diagram p2. from ‘An Abstract of the Evidence Delivered Before a Select Committee of the House of Commons in the years 1790 and 1791 on the part of the petitioners for the abolition of the slave trade’.This diagram shows how the slaves were placed in the ships.This source suggests that slavery is wrong because it shows how they crammed in such a large number of people into ships which were not big enough to carry that many and treated them like products instead of humans. For example, it shows how 450 slaves were placed into the ships and crammed so close together that they could barely even move from their positions. They would put them as close together as they possibly could in cells that were only 3 feet tall. This is evidence to support the abolition of slavery because the slaves were treated so poorly and not even acknowledged as humans.

Slave Auctions

This source is an article advertising the slave auctions. This source suggests that slavery is wrong as they were degrading the slaves and not treating them like humans. For example the advertisement shows that buyers will be able to choose from 10 Negroes, they also state that one of the males is a superior Cook and House servant and a 17 year old girl is a first rate house servant and excellent seamstress. They were advertised like products and treated like animals. This is evidence to support the abolition of slavery because the slaves were degraded and auctioned off as if they were commodities

This source is a receipt from the sale of 2 slaves, Jane aged 18, her son Henry aged 1 and all her future children, on the 20th of December 1849. This source suggests that slavery is wrong because they treated the slaves like commodities. The receipt also guaranteed that the buyer would have ownership of any of her children born in the future. The buyer was Judge S. Williams of Eufaula and he paid $600 for his purchase. This is evidence to support the abolition of slavery because the slaves were treated as if they were products and if they ever wanted more children, they would be born into slavery.

This source is a photo of Fountain Hughes, a former slave who at the time of this interview was 101 years old. He was interviewed by Hermond Norwood and told his stories about slavery and his family. This source suggests that slavery is wrong because he says that they were nothing more than dogs to the slave owners. It didn't matter if they were tired if they were told to cut tobacco all night they would have to comply. Fountain said that if he ever had to be a slave again he would take a gun and end it all. This is evidence to support the abolition of slavery because the slaves were treated so horribly they would rather take their own lives.
