Captain Cook and the First Fleet

Captain cook founded the land of Australia in 1770. He was the discoverer of the east coast of Australia and named it New South Wales. This means that the land of Australia would be taken by the British Empire. The land was then decided to be used to keep prisoners and convicts. The first ever fleet to bring the convicts to Australia was the First Fleet. The first fleet was made up of 11 ships and had over 1480 people all together. The convicts would farm, build and help with making Sydney Cove a dock for all the ships that would come in with more prisoners. This is one of the reasons that Australia became developed a lot faster and better. The ships also had materials, tools and machines from the industrial revolution that would help Sydney Cove develop so that the British could send more convicts over. This source shows Captain Cook, one of the ships that were apart of the First Fleet and the Australian land in the background. This shows that new land has been discovered by captain Cook and it will make a good settlement and addition to the British empire.

The owners of the land

Captain Cook was not however the first person to touch foot in Australia. Australia was owned by its native people the Aboriginals. The Aboriginals have lived on this land for over 60,000 years and maybe even longer. Aboriginals would have been in different tribes and lived very different to people in every other country. Aboriginals wouldn't have developed Australia as fast if the British didn't discover Australia. Aboriginals were black and had different religion traditions to every other culture. Aboriginals were very good at creating different art pieces in rocks and on trees. They also created different types of clothing, weaponry, tools, utensils, and ceremonial clothing. When The British landed on Australia the Aboriginal did not know who they were, didn't like who they were, and thought they were attacking so they fought back. This created big fights but the Aboriginals were out gunned because there weaponry wasn't as developed as the British. This meant that the British won and took the land from the Aboriginals. This was a big negative for the Aboriginals because this meant that they weren't able to follow traditional ceremonies and wouldn't be looked after very well by the British.

European Settlement

After the British claimed the land from the Aboriginals they started to develop Sydney Cove into a place to keep all the convicts. They made the convicts make farms and plantations for food, Build houses for the British and shelters for the convicts. This was a very positive event for Australia due to the land being rapidly developed into a settlement. The Sydney Cove dockland was officially established in 1797. This meant that more ships could be sent to Australia and there would be more convicts to help develop Australia faster. The industrial revolution also impacted on the speed of development for Australia because machines that would help build buildings and make clothes would be shipped over to Australia to help produce more materials faster for the development of Australia. Positive signs for the British were shown from the rapid development of Australia. But in the Aboriginals point of view it looked like the white people were destroying there native land and home. Aboriginals would also be taken as prisoners and put to work to help develop Sydney but the weren't treated the same as the other convicts. Due to the fact that Aboriginals were black the British would treat them like slaves which meant that the Aboriginals became slaves for the British.

Why Aboriginals became Slaves

120 years before Australia was discovered the Europeans and Americans Traded Africans for different goods like cotton, food, animals and other goods. The African were treated very badly and became slaves for the Americans and Europeans. Africans were treated differently all because they and a different skin colour. The Europeans and Americans thought it wasn't right to have a different skin colour so the Africans were treated differently. Now because the Aboriginals were black the British treated them like the Africans and would get punished more than the white convicts. This was very dreadful for the Aboriginals because there land has been taken form them and now they are getting treated very poorly all because they were black. But in the other hand it helped build Australia into what it is today. This image is a photo of white slave traders taking black Africans into a boat and back to either Europe or america to be slaves for the people that bought them. This also means that Aboriginals could have been sold to different settlers to help develop different things like, farms, buildings and others. By having these aboriginal slave it meant that Sydney would get developed a lot faster because they had extra hands but it was also awful for the Aboriginals due to them being forced to destroy their home land and turn into a settlement for people they didn't even know.

Ways to make slaves work

Not all of the slaves would do what they were told to do. Some would have tried to run and escape from being slaves for the British. So the British brought over a couple of their punishments with them. One of those would be the cat o' nine tails whip. This whip would have nine tails connected to a rod for a handle. At the end of each tail the rope would be knotted toe deal more pain. The rope might even be knotted through the middle as well depending on how much pain it was going to give. The Cat would be a very painful punishment because the knots would slash the skin and take blood away. The wounds from the Cat would be very dangerous because they could get infected from all the germs and it being an open wound. Slaves could also die of blood loss from the slashes. This was even more devastating for the Aboriginals because now they were getting tortured from the British because they weren't working for them on their home land. But it was also a good thing for the development of Australia because after the slashes the Aboriginals would learn their lesson and don't want to be slashed so they work faster and harder.

What we have become due to European settlement and Aboriginal slavery.

From the landing in Sydney cove to the slashing of the Aboriginal slaves all of this work from the convicts and slaves has helped develop Australia into a British settlement and create a new country. By having Aboriginal slavery it is both a negative and positive for Australia because if the British didn't find this land Australia would be developed a lot slower and not known of until later. Also by having the British take the Aboriginals as slaves it boosted the pace of Australia development and made Australia what it looks like today. Even though the British took the land from the Aboriginals the British helped build their home into a better place and provide more room for more population. This image shows us what Sydney Cove looks like today. If Aboriginal slavery and the settlement of the British Sydney Cove would not look like this today. Slavery is a negative for the aboriginals but it created a positive for the future and tells us that Australia would not be this developed today. The colonisation of Australia was a big movement fr the British and Aboriginals but it has made a better future.
