The transatlantic slave trade was responsible for the forced migration of between 12 - 15 million people from Africa to the Western Hemisphere. Called the Triangular trade because of the shape of the route. This is how many slaves got introduces to the Americas.
John Punch
John Punch was a black servant that ran away with two white servants, James, Gregory, and Victor. After the three were captured, Punch was sentenced to serve Virginia planter Hugh Gwyn for the rest of his life. This made John Punch the first legally documented slave in Virginia and in the US.
Massachusetts Abolished Slavery
In challenges by Elizabeth FreemanandQuock Walker, two independent county courts in Massachusetts found slavery illegal under state constitution and declared each to be free people.
Cotton Gin
Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin making the cotton harvesting quicker and more profitable. This caused slaves to be expected to get more done.
The Liberator
William Garrison publishes an abolitionist newspaper called The Liberator. It stated that owning slaves was a sin.
Prigg vs. Pennsylvania
The US Supreme court rules that states don“t have to offer aid in the hunting or recapture of slaves. This weakened the fugitive slave law.
The KKK is formed in Tennessee and is made up of white Confederate veterans.It becomes an insurgent group of white Supremacy. They believe that whites are the superior race.
Buffalo Soldiers
A cavalry group of the United States Army. This regimen was made up completely of African Americans which made this very significant.
Dred Scott vs. Sanford
Court ruling that upholds slavery. This Supreme Court Ruling was one key cause of the American Civil War.
