"The Lash". A common punishment used for slaves for misbehaviour or even sometimes just because their owners can. Even though this was a common punishment, the lash would often be very brutal.
These slaves are fed up with the way that they are being treated and are starting to riot over their freedom. During this time everyone is not believing the slaves that they should be free. I believe that this supports the abolishion of slavery as everyone believes that these human beings deserve more than this, they deserve a happy life, and be able to have the same rights as everyone else.
