Renaissance & Reformation

The transition period between the Middle Ages and the modern time. Protestant Reformation being one of the most important events during this time period, began as a reform movement within the Catholic Church. However, it ended as a revolution which let religious ideas spark in Europe. The most important war during this time is The One Hundred Year War.

Ancient Times

War constantly goes on during the Ancient Times in Greece and Rome. They are usually between city-states and polis. However, three details separate them apart from other wars. First, the kind of weapon used were relatively barbaric. Most common weapons/tools used during the time were spears, chariots, and shields. Soldiers would fight face to face and kill each other. Consequently, due to the poor advance in technology, casualty counts were usually not high. Second, the soldiers fight in war are mainly high class citizens, because it is a pride that they get to fight for their city-state. Third, the amount of respect between soldier and soldier is incomparable to more present wars. Both sides must agree to fight between any physical contact will occur. And, of course, there are no sneak attack.

Thesis

Warfare in European history since the ancient time have change dramatically overtime. Due to the new weapons that were invented throughout history. The way war are fought is very different from the ancient times. From spears to nuclear bombs, from a few casualties to 3% of human population wiped out on earth. Warfare have changed since the beginning of human evolution.

Post WWII - Present

After the WWII, there wasn't any real war in Europe. However, nuclear weapons were created and used during this time. USSR and the US had competition in science and weapon. There was a Cuban Missile Crisis caused by USSR placing nuclear bombs in Cuban targeted to the US. Even though a war never broke our between USSR and the US, the US did however attacked Japan with a nuclear weapon that destroyed the city of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. From the development of nuclear weapon, people were more afraid of WWIII because they can't possibly imagine what kind of casualties the new weapons would bring.

World War II

After the ending of WWI, the people in Europe is very scared of WWII because they saw the casualty number going up, and they know, if there was a WWII, the number would only become higher. WWII is started by Hitler invading Poland, then lead to the Axis power fighting the allies. During WWII, fighter planes, bomber planes, sonars, radars, and more advanced tanks were being used. Fighter planes allowed soldiers to kill more people faster, with more destruction then ever before. Bomber planes allowed them to destroy enemy base in no time but at the same time causing destruction to the civilians. Consequently causing a total war where everyone gets involved. With the invention of Sonars and Radars, the soldiers were able to detect enemy planes, tanks from miles away, but also let to sneak attacks. (60 million casualties/3% of world population at the time)

World War I

For the first time, tanks and machine-guns were used in battles. World War I is also the first time that countries were fighting in allegiances. Trenches play a big role in this war because it allowed the soldiers to fight while stay hidden. Tanks were used to run over trenches, but there are downsides of tanks too. Tanks are very very slow at the time, which is not practical in moving fights, it also takes up a lot of fuel which is hard to get during war time. The invention of Machine guns revolutionized casualty number in wars, it needed no aiming, rather just point and shoot. The soldiers fighting in WWI didn't exactly understand what they are fight for though, therefore lead to the Christmas Treaty where both sides stopped fighting and celebrated Christmas together. (40 million casualties in total)

Age of Revolution

During this time period, battle strategies were advanced more than weapons. Advance in battle formations allowed the soldiers to be more effective in defeating the enemy. On top of that, better formations allowed the soldiers to rest more because they were easily swappable.

Age of Absolutism

Time period when absolute monarchs starts to appear. The famous among all is Louis XIV. It was the first time that firearms were introduced in the war. Cannons were used for the first time as well. It was much more destructive than any weapon that came before. However, it is very heavy so it was not easy for the soldiers to move it, and that is when musket were used with cannon. Unlike cannons, muskets were much easier to use it on the go. Soldiers were able to carry them as they walk around. With the advance in weapon, the casualty number went up.

Middle Ages

The Middle Ages is the time period between the fall of the Roman Empire and the advance of the Renaissance period in Europe. There are no exact time period for Middle Ages, but it takes place during the 13th century. Middle Ages time period created a lot of new attack techniques and weapons. New techniques of war varies a lot from battle to battle because mostly due to economic, cultural, social and technological changes. Two famous war during the Middle Ages are The Battle of Hastings and The Battle of Tours.
