Warfare from the ancient times to the middle ages changed and developed into new ideas and tactics. For example, the “boar snout” was a tactical wedge that consisted of an infantry unit tightly packed together in a triangular form with a leading head in the front. As war chariots and cavalry became more frequently used, the long-handled Danish battle axe was used to take out enemies on horses. This was first used at the Battle of Hastings and the weapon turned out to be successful.
In the beginning of the crusades, knights and heavily armed horsemen played a big part in warfare. Foot soldiers counted for very little during the war periods. Later on, they used cannons and bombards for throwing heavy stone balls.
