Ulysses S. Grant
Ulysses Simpson Grant, also known as “Unconditional Surrender” Grant, was first the Colonel of the 21st Illinois Infantry regiment and then was promoted to Brigadier General of that regiment. In 1864, Grant was appointed commander of all U.S. armies, with the rank of lieutenant general. With this title, Grant constantly occupied the Confederate army in the East, while the Union troops destroyed homes, factories and farms, along with the Southerner’s will to fight. On April 9, 1865, his plan succeeded and the Confederate army surrendered to Grant. He is known as the hero who achieved victory.
