Candle makers job
Chalders were important to people of the middle ages. Candle making was not a particularly difficult task as most people could possibly do it on their own. It was however time consuming, so the task was generally centralized to one group of people.
The candle makers
There are no famous candle makers that we know of, however, many candle makers were well liked by their town for providing them light.
Light for the commoners
A chalder would go around the town collecting the animal fat most commonly used to make candles and then make them into candles. This fat was then melted down and poured around strings to make the candle. Tallow candles made in this process were very foul smelling to burn and to make.
The candles
A chandler sometimes had bee hives around their house to make candles with bee’s wax. This required some skill and was also time consuming. because of the bee wax used to make these candles it was more expensive then a regular tallow candles but they had no smell and burned more evenly so the rich would buy many of them.
