The Fighting Temeraire tugged to her last berth to be broken up, 1838 is an oil painting by the English artist J. M. W. Turner. HMS Temeraire was one of the last second-rate ships of the line to have played a distinguished role in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. [more]

Assassination of Abraham Lincoln (April 14th, 1865)

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the US, in period of presidency he was shot in the back of the head.

On April 14th 1865, Lincoln was attending a performance of "Our American Cousin" at Ford's theatre in Washington, D.C when he was shot in the back of the head with a pistol by John Wilkes Booth. Booth had previously planned to kidnap the president at an earlier date but failed to do so, so instead he planned something much more diabolical in comparison, and that was to assassinate the president. After booth had successfully shot the president he leapt onto the stage and chanted "Sic temper tyrannies" ("Thus ever to tyrants" - the Virginia state motto). The search for John Booth after the assassination was was of the biggest known manhunts fun history with 10 000 federal troops, detectives and police trying to track down the assassin.

The following morning from the attack, Lincoln passed away

13th Amendment

The United States Constitution had the 13th Amendment which was to abolish all slavery and involuntary servitude unless as punishment for a crime.

The 13th Amendment was the first of three Reconstruction Amendments post the American Civil War.

This particular Amendment was passed by the senate on April 8th 1864, but as a result of an unsuccessful vote it was then also passed by House on January 1st, 1865. On December 18th also in 1865, the Secretary of State William H. Seward proclaimed its adoption.

14th Ammendment

The 14th Amendment (ratified in 1868) was the second of three amendments to the US Constitution and it granted citizenship to anyone who was born or naturalised in the United States, this included former slaves and guaranteed all citizens "equal protection of the laws".

The amendment was passed during the reconstruction period to abolish slavery and establish legal rights for the black

African Americans.

Emmet Till Murder (August 28th 1955)

The 15th Amendment granted the African American men the right to vote.

"Rights of the citizens of the United Sates to vote shall not be denied by the United States or bye any state on account of race, colour or prior condition of servitude."

The Southern States were able to disenfranchise the African Americans by presenting literacy tests, poll taxes and other means.

Although the amendment was passed on February 3rd 1870, it was over a century before this particular amendment to be recognised and it took the passage of the Voting Rights Act. of 1955 before the majority of African Americans living in the Southern States were even registered to vote.
