Loreta Janeta Velázquez
Loreta Janeta Velázquez was a Confederate lieutenant in the Civil War. After her husband, who was a Confederate soldier, refused to let her join him in battle, she had a uniform made and disguised under the moniker, Harry T. Buford. She eventually presented herself to her husband as his commanding officer. He was killed a few days later, but she headed to the North to participate in the Battle of First Manassas and the Battle of Ball's Bluff. Later, returning back home to the South, Velázquez became a member of the detective corps. She was so apt to fight that she returned to Tennessee to fight the Battle of Fort Donelson, getting wounded but sneaking back home to avoid getting her gender discovered.
