World War I

World War I was the war between Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire fought against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan, and the United States. After the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the war began and lasted from 1914 through 1918. The war caused great loss of ration toward Germany, they soon surrendered. Germany signed an armistice (an agreement for peace for both countries and no more fighting) in 1918 at 11 am November 11th.

The Hero Cher Ami

The Hero Cher Ami, save the lives of about 200 men during World War I. The army was being attacked by its own country, missiles being dropped by planes, and bullets were shooting all around from the opposing side. The soldiers were sending pigeons one by one to get a message to the headquarters for back up and to stop the chaos. But one by one the pigeons were being shot down from the opposing side. Until Cher Ami was the last pigeon left. They tagged the message on her and she flew, she was shot in the eye, she kept on flying. SHe was shot in the chest, she kept on flying. She was then shot in the leg, she kept on flying. She flew for 20 minutes and landed in headquarters, gave the message and stopped the chaos, she then got emergency surgery and survived. Unfortunately, she died at the age of 9, in 1919.

77th Infantry Division

77th Infantry Division, at the end of World War II, the division had counted 2,140 killed men, and 5,737 wounded. This division was then deactivated in 1946. During the postwar period from 1947 to 1965, the 77th Infantry Division became to be known as the "Liberty Patch Division.

The Role of Carrier Pigeons During World War I

The carrier pigeons are one of the most reliable birds during World War I. These birds were the only way for the military to communicate with the headquarters. Although these bords can be taken out by a bullet, they have unique abilities that make them reliable. These birds can fly up to 90 miles per hour, they have incredible navigational abilities they always know where their home is and always return no matter how far. The military saw this as an advantage. They trained these birds to think the headquarters is their nest or home, so every time they had to send a message they would always fly to the headquarters. These messages were strapped on to the bird, they were written down on a piece of paper and stuffed in a tube attached to the bird. *as you can see in the picture above.*
