The Day Breakers; By Arna Bontemps

Arna Bontemps was born in Louisiana but his family later moved to California. After he graduated from Pacific Union he moved to the Harlem Renaissance. This poem reflects the bravery that people who were in the Harlem Renaissance had because they were rebelling against the norm of the people.

Jessie was born in New Jersey and eventually moved to Philadelphia. She received a scholarship at Cornell University. Later she became a literary editor for W.E.B DuBois. This poem, "Dead Fires", is about the bravery and determination that African Americans had to fit into society during this time.

Duke Ellington

From the Great Migration, jazz artist Duke Ellington moved from Washington D.C to New York. Duke Ellington contributed to the Harlem Renaissance by playing regularly at The Cotton Club, which was a jazz club located in Harlem from 1923 to 1935. The Cotton Club was an all-whites establishment at the time. Ellington transformed jazz music and turned it into an art form for all people. Also, Ellington created a new sound, known as the jungle sound. This sound was different from previous jazz, and had a gritty sound. He created and named it the jungle sound to portray the reality of living in the United States as a Black-American at that time period. Duke Ellington brought great racial and social advancement into the Harlem Renaissance.

Josephine Baker

Josephine Baker was born on June 3rd, 1906 and died April 12th, 1975. She was born and raised in Saint Louis, Missouri. She made the journey of the Great Migration into Harlem. Josephine Baker was most influential for being the first black woman to become a world-famous entertainer. She also is known for being a fashion trendsetter. Later in her life, she contributed to the African American Civil Rights movement and is known for refusing to perform for segregated audiences.

The person who painted this painting is Jacob Lawrence, it is titled, self portrait. John Lawrence is from Africa and is known for his painting of African American life. This painting relates to the renaissance because it is of an African American and is very colorful and vivid.

This painting by Aaron Douglas is titled, Into Bondage, shows many aspects of negro life. Aaron Douglas is from Topeka, Kansas. This painting shows aspects of negro life because it shows the slave ships in the distance and the people in the woods wearing shackles. This relates to Harlem because many of the people living there were African American.

Minton's Playhouse

Founded in 1938 by Henry Milton, this building was a famous jazz club during the Harlem Renaissance. Many famous people came to play at this club; such as Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, and Dizzy Gillepsie. This club is still used for jazz musicians today.

Jubilee Stomp

Duke Ellington was very famous during the Harlem renaissance. Duke’s music, along with this song, is representation of the music being played in Harlem at that time. This song, Jubilee Stomp, along with other Duke Ellington’s songs have the authentic jazz sound that Harlem is known for. Duke Ellington will always be remembered as an outstanding member of the Harlem renaissance.

The song Savoy Blues was by Louis Armstrong. From New Orleans, he moved to New York City and became a big name in the Harlem renaissance. This song is in the genre of Jazz which is the roots of the Harlem Renaissance. Louis was a big trumpet player which this song revolves around. He will forever be apart of the Jazz and Harlem culture.

The Cotton Club

The Cotton Club was a jazz club that African American artists would play at for white audiences. It was located in Harlem, New York and its prime years was during 1922-1935. Some main people who would preform there was Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway.
