Minamoto no yoritomo
1192 - Minamoto Yoritomo appointed Shogun, led government which became known as Shogunate. Civil war between feudal lords spread around this time as well

1635 - Sakoku Edict is put into play. Japanese could not leave the country, nor could Europeans enter the country. Foreign Trade was restricted

1854 - Japan and U.S. signed Treaty of Peace and Amity, two ports were opened for trade

1914 - Japan joins with Britain and its allies for the first world war
Great Kanto Earthquake
1923 - Great Kanto Earthquake, destroys Tokyo and Yokohama, more than 140,000 people are killed
World War II
1940 - Japan allied with Italy and Nazi Germany in the second World War. This started the alliance triangle called the Axis.
Attack on Pearl Harbour
1941 - Japan launched surprise attack on Pearl Harbour, the U.S. Naval Base in Hawaii, sunk 12 ships, damaged nine, nearly 2,500 people killed
Hiroshima Bombing
1945 - Hiroshima and Nagasaki are bombed by the U.S. which Emperor Hirohito to surrender and dismiss his status. August 6 (Hiroshima), August 9 (Nagasaki), Surrender (August 15)
New Government System
1947 - New constitution approved that change the system of government, called a constitutional monarchy
