Jacob Lawrence was an artist known for his portrayal of the African American life. He was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey but moved to New York City when he was 13 years old. His mother put him into art classes to keep him busy and that’s when he realized he loved creating dynamic pieces. This piece is called Self-Portrait and it portrays Jacob as a happy artist doing what he loves. This has more of an abstract sense to it but if you look closely you can see a painting of Harriet Tubman leading slaves to freedom which shows how he felt about freedom for African American people. This relates to the renaissance because it’s showing that he cares about freedom and showing people that everyone is equal. Jacob Lawrence was like a lot of other artists during this era because a lot of harlem artists enjoyed creating abstract pieces.
