Aaron Douglas; he was an African American man who was very important figure in the Harlem Renaissance and he made many illustrations and graphics during his time and was also asked to create graphics for other writers. He also received a teaching position at Fisk University. This painting shows the importance and emphasis music had during the time. The figure up higher playing a trumpet type of instrument is above all representing how highly music was thought of as well as all the figures behind and below dancing and enjoying the music. This piece of art has few colors total and are dull and darker colors. The shape appears to be 2D and simplified with some soft and hard edges. The mood created is a happy and cheerful as well as calming vibes. The subject matter are figured of people and it is arranged in a portrait format. The lighting is back lit with beams of light coming down adding focus to one figure.

"Shore Leaves" by Ellis Wilson; in 1982 he moved to Harlem New York and joined the Harlem Artist Guided and worked at a brokerage house. And from 1935-1940 he worked for the federal art project. He was never wealthy however he did win several prizes for his paintings. This painting related to the message of the renaissance as it displays happy people dancing to music at an event or party of some sort. This is an important aspect of the time period as their culture had a significant amount of parties and events where the people would come together and enjoy some good music. The colors of the painting are very dull, pale and neutral colors. The shape of the painting has natural depth and space with mostly soft edges, all these factors help create the mood of the painting. This mood has a very cheerful and relaxed and well as energy vibes. The subject matter are many figures of people, as well as it is arranged in a square format with with overlying people, chaos, and clutter.

Aaron Douglas was born in Topeka Kansas the year of 1899, he was originally inspired by his mother's drawings. Douglas create many paintings representing the life of african americans during the renaissance and beyond. Many of his paintings addressed cultural and racial issues similar to many other creators of the time period. He fused modern art with tradition african american art to create a really unique style

Claude Mckay was a jamaican poet and played a large role in the fundamentals of the Harlem Renaissance

Most of Mckay's poems represent the mindset of where african americans have come from and what they have accomplished since the beginning of time. The mistreatment of african americans was improved incredibly throughout the renaissance and his poems represents that. Mckay was originally born in jamaica but then moved to the united states, when he arrived he was faced with an intense issue, racism. Though his poetry evolved the view of african americans and created a platform for all. SImilar to other authors mckay uses his individual style to characterize his own life and make his own path.

Langston Hughes- “I,too” is a poem he wrote about being a patriot has nothing to do with race. This reflects the harlem renaissance because it is about african american culture and

new ideas. Hughes was from Missouri. He moved to New York when he was a child and published his first poem in 1921. Hughes was one of the first innovators of jazz poetry. This resembles the harlem renaissance because it blends African-American culture and new ideas.

Claude Mckay- “Home to Harlem” is a novel that Mckay wrote which became the first bestselling novel by an African- American author. He was originally from Jamaica but then moved to New York. Claude Mckay was very influential to future black poets and authors. His writing motivated others to discuss the poor treatment of racism during the time. His novel is about two men on very different paths struggling to deal with racism and prejudice in America.

Art- Jeunesse by Palmer Hayden

Palmer Hayden was an African American painter who lived in New York City. He made a name for himself by painting African American life. This piece is called Jeunesse which depicts a couple dancing to jazz music which is being played by the band in the background. The mood of this piece is very lighthearted and fun because of the light colors used. The way the people in the painting look is very modern for the time period. This work is very similar to those of other artists of the time, because most art pieces were based on African American lifestyle. -Maddi Mckinney

Art- The Ascent of Ethiopia by Lois Mailou Jones

Lois Mailou Jones grew up in Boston, Massachusetts. She had a hard time getting her work in galleries because of racism and censorship. This painting shows the journey of African Americans establishing their heritage. It displays their struggles and achievements in a judgemental society. This painting includes dark colors which creates an intense mood. This painting is similar to others of its time period because it depicts African American life and heritage. -Maddi Mckinney

Location - Minton’s Playhouse was a jazz club and bar in Harlem that opened in 1938. Minton’s is famous for its role in the development of modern jazz. Famous musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie and Kenny Clarke played here. The owner, Henry Minton, was aware of the economic needs of New York jazz musicians, as well as their artistic needs, and generously gave out food and loans to jazz artists. This made Minton’s Playhouse a popular spot for jazz sessions. The club had “Monday Celebrity Nights”, where notable musicians such as Roy Eldridge and Lester Young would play. This opened the eyes of many to the world of jazz music.

Location

The Cotton Club was opened in 1923 by Owney Madden, a New York gangster. The club was opened for the illegal distribution of alcohol during Prohibition, but it featured many famous African American artists such as Duke Ellington and Ethel Waters. Originally it was an only white club, but Duke Ellington persuaded the owner to allow them to be admitted as guests, not just employees there. The Cotton Club remained open until 1940, but other versions of it have opened up in Harlem, Chicago, and in California.
