During the period that the Berlin Wall was up, it divided the country physically and emotionally. People weren't allowed to cross sides, visit family members, communicate in any way from both sides, or to go to their jobs if they were on opposite sides.By the late 1960's, people wanted to leave east Germany because they could not stand being ruled by the Soviet Union.By the late 1970's East Germany was loosing most of its population. The population of East Germany was going down rapidly as around 1,500 people were fleeing everyday.
